Played golf on my jack today and was invited to join another 2 guys for a game. They had all the gear, were smartly attired and seemed sensible enough so I agreed. This was a huge mistake.

The woes began on the first tee. After drawing for the honour the 1st guy was to tee off. The course is under winter conditions hence mats however he and his partner refused to use them.

The 1st guy tee'd off and sliced the ball straight into the trees. He decided to play a 2nd ball. Myself and player 2 tee'd off well and down the fairway we walked.

Player 1 then proceeded to play his second ball, as he approached it I informed him that it was his 4th stroke. "no it ain't, this is my second he replied." I then explained why it was his 4th and he said "I don't know what rules your'e playing mate."

Already with the hump, I decided to play to the end of the hole with them. Player 1 then addressed the ball and made an almighty air-shot. I informed him that it was a stroke and got a similarly retarded reply.

Player 2 then lashed at his 2nd shot, the ball went 45 degrees left into the rough on the next hole. He went to his bag, dropped a new ball on the fairway and hit that. Of course this was done without penalty.

Anyway, we eventually got to the green, we were on the 1st round of 9 holes so the red flags were in use as per the card. I was 20ft, player 2 was 6ft and player 1 was 35ft away. He however was 3ft from the blue flag so he said that he would be putting to that hole. Again I informed him of the rules, again he gave me an silly reply.

We all putted, I had made a 5 on this par 4, player 1 scored himself a par 4 as did player 2.

I had had enough, I stood there and pointed them out the various infringements that they had made. They said I didn't know what I was talking about. I told them that they were a couple of cheating a-holes at the end of the day, I told them to play ahead and that I no longer wished to play with them. "oh well, your loss" and "well you shouldn't be a stuck-up prat" were their respective replies.

When a member in his 60's told them not to take their trolleys on the green they told him to F-Off, In addition they dropped lucozade bottles and snickers wrappers on the floor.

When I had finished I attempted to report them to the pro-shop. Turns out they shouldn't have even been on the course as they hadn't paid a green fee.

This has been a valuable lesson to me about the woes of public courses. Perhaps my days as a nomadic golfer will be ending sooner than I thought, It is unbelievable how these 2 prats behaved. All the gear, no idea.

Rant Over - Jon :(

Hi John.
What a pair of A-se Holes.
Ive seen the sort of blokes like them at our local course fortunately never had the misfortune to play with them.Just watching some of them is enough to put you off.

Thats why it would be nice to have some sort of ruling to make sure you are able to play before you are allowed onto a course but as we all know its down to money in the till for the municipals.

The good thing is you probably wont see them again but it's just a shame the minority spoil it for the majority.

I tell you what incensed me today - I was perusing a copy of TG (and GM!) last night, thinking about a different 3H purchase. I found a company (online and shop) advertising a "****" driver for £149.00

So, on my way back from the university, I took a 20 mile detour to find one of their shops.

I found it.....hooray, BUT the ********* *******, this price is for "what they have left in stock" (so I was told).

All they had, and all they have online is 8.5 degree x-stiff. What a waste of time.......

along the same lines a "well-known" supermarket has some posh LCD flat-screens on sale a/t/m/. Sony 26" at £349.99, could I find one?...like...um...no! I got well p***** off, phoned the national headquarters to enquire if there were any, anywhere and they replied....No, the supplier can't get them (anywhere from the whole world), so we can't sell them.

So basically, you can advertise anything, anytime, at any price with no responsibility for whether you can really get things......arghhh......what's it all coming to?

At least my Sunday matchplay won't be called off!!!

Jon,

I think I may have met these fellows a few times myself; or it may be that they are cloned all over the country!!

In my younger days I believed Local Authorities employed fellows like these to keep the honest respectful golfer of their courses; turns out there are just a lot of morons in the world!

Smile and remember that they will never get the enjoyment out of playing that you do; then forget them forever.....

Refering to the OP, This kind behaviour isn't exclusive to golf courses these days, it is endemic of the population as a whole.
At the risk of sounding like an old fart, people have no respect for anything anymore. Whether it be for people, traditions, law, or in this case, the rules of golf.
The way they spoke to the elderly gentleman after they had left you, tells you all you need to know about them.

I believe you call them pricks these days.

It's best just to try and avoid these kind of people in your day to day business. I know I try to, but sometimes it's unavoidable. You did exactly as I would have done.

Its not just the casual golfer who can create havoc like this. I can remember a company day some time ago where some of those attending who weren't real golfers enjoyed a little bit too much hospiatlty and managed to get buggies stuck in a bunker. Told the greenkeeper to f off when he came to help. Now one buggie could have been an accident, but two... that's just careless.. especially when the second entered from the green sider of the bunker!

Anyway left that employer some time ago and to my knowledge they still havent been back to that venue!

alas this isn't confined to golf but i recently told my lad that one of his mates wouldn't be welcome on any further golf games we have due to his lack of respect for others and general demeanour on the course. i just about got through to him what was considered acceptable and unacceptable behaviour but i could tell he thought i was a old fart for pulling him up. i am not just tarring the youth as there is no age restriction on general bad manners i have found.

Where are you now Attila? Bring back flogging!
I have long thought that a bit of flogging before the start of football matches would have cured the hooligan problem much more quickly, and certainly less expensively.
What's needed now is a flogging triangle adjacent to the first tee.
