I have been playing golf now for about six months and gradually getting a bit better but wondered if lessons would be of use ?
I tend to keep the ball fairly straight but dont hit them as far as i maybe should.
What do you think ?

For me a resounding 100% YES and without them I'd have quit the game long ago. Now I love it with a passion

For me lessons have been very worth while. Sometimes I go backwards for a few range sessions if we are doing a bigger change to my swing but overall I am certainly more consistent now than I was before and I am hitting much further with far less effort into the swing. As an example I can hit a 9 Iron 1.5 times further with 1/2 a swing.

Lessons are definately worth the time and effort but you will need to practice in between as well to get the full benefit and also bear in mind you may go backwards intially

as pbrown says only if you practise what is preached and also take it to the course and stick with it

I have had lessons and initially done some of the practice then reverted... still off 28 and really shouldnt be according to my pro!

Yes, sooner the better!
Wise man once said to me;
Practice makes PERMANENT!
Basically if your new to the game and are engraining some bad habits into your swing, then you become very good t being very bad!
Wish I had some sooner! ;)

I came to golf late..I was about 30 when I started playing.

I waited about 3 years before I had a lesson...with hindsight it was a mistake to wait so long, as getting over my bad habits was harder work than starting from scratch

I'm lucky enough to have a regular playing partner who is a Pro...who coaches playing pro's, it's amazing to hear some of the aches and pains the best players go through too.

If they're good enough to be on tour and they still take lessons...it must be the right thing to do.

Undoubtedly. As a newbie you have a huge advantage over most of us in that your faults won't be ingrained yet Get lessons now and get the fundamentals right and you'll have a firm foundation to build a swing and your handicap on. I've just changed to a new teaching pro and he has invigorated my game in one 30 minute lesson. I had a range session tonight and it wasn't great but the poor shots would have been far more playable than with my old swing and thats the key - keeping it in play

As I've always said and has been said above...

Lessons are a complete waste of time, money and effort unless you have the time, will and patience to hit the range and beat many, many balls to ingrain any changes made to your swing.
Lessons are not a necessity, they can be very useful.

If you do have lessons then you MUST back it up or you may as well just give the Pro the cash and not bother.

The man talks sense, hence why I don't bother.

I do agree with Imurg. If I have a lesson I reckon on at least 3-4 range sessions to work on the drills to make it feel anything resembling reliable and working well. I'd expect to have a few bad rounds too as playing where there is only one chance and hitting balls are worlds apart. Once it clicks though and providing you have the faith the trust the pro and keep with the changes when it starts going wrong, then usually the result is a real good score, especially the first time it gels.

Lessons are definately the way forward. So long as you accept your game will suffer for a while before it improves. Just go with what your pro tells you and whether in comps or friendly games stick with his/her advice. Something will suddenly click and your game will improve. (I went through lessons with 4 pros before I decided to stick with their teachings, even in friendlys and the last pro took me from 18 to 13 handicap in 6 months. I stuck with his advice and played some cracking shots, but many more awful shots for the first two months before I reaped the rewards). Definately go for the lessons, but don't worry if your game seems worse to start with. It will come good and you won't get there by playing loads of golf without instruction

I presume after your score last Saturday you'll be booking some more sharpish

I've already spoken to Ali and will be having a couple of lessons over winter (and the practice to back it up). I'm strill struggling with hitting anything longer than a 6 iron off the deck, but am persevering with my rescues/5 wood, even in comps. You will see many more poor scores over winter Homer before that part of my game improves. If I stuck with the trusty 6 iron off the deck I could quite comfortably play to my H/cap.
Am playing round 1 of the winter league today (Fri) so will be making good use of Mr 6 iron so as to not let my partner (Reidy) down. Here's hoping...........
