Are lessons worth the money?

I am a basically self taught golfer, who is average at best, and have played with the idea of paying for lessons for several years now but have never actually done it.

Any of you that have taken lessons, did they seem to make a big enough difference in your golf game to warrant the spending? If so how many lessons did you take?

Thanks for the help,
Jordan

Made a big help to me.... Going by todays round iv got my money's worth 10 times over..... But you'll only get out of them what you put in....They are not for everyone....There are many good low handicappers on here that have never had lessons....And equally there are many on here that swear by them..... I was like you...I started off a handicap of 21 5 years ago and im now down to 12 and after this mornings escapde ill be cut further again....

Lessons all depend on what your flaws are.... Everyone has them and for some they are balanced enough in that they can get there way round a course even with their faults.....
I was stubborn thinking that i could do it on my own....Ill never know now if i would have been able to but i took a course of lessons last october and it nearly broke me trying to change a swing path which some will say is probably the hardest thing to do...

So weigh up your goals..... If your stuck at the handicap your on for the past few years then lessons could help...But you need to put the effort and the work in to what the Pro wants you to do.....
If your goal is to be the best you can be then lessons may do you no harm at all......You'll always wonder what the grass is like on the other side of the fence unless you jump over it....

BTW..... I took 8, 30 minute lessons over 6 months

Before I had my first lesson I was comfortable playing off 24..... I then had 2 lessons (mainly aimed at hitting my driver) and they absolutely ruined me.

For 4 months I didn't break 100 and felt really down with the whole game. Slowly it came back once I worked out for myself what I needed to do to start playing well again.

The lessons were approx 1 year ago so I only started playing well in about november last year and since then I've scored numerous between 79 and 84.

Would I have another lesson? No.

Lessons are worthwhile if you're a beginner to get the fundamentals right.
After that they're only worthwhile if you have to time and energy to practice what has been taught
If not then I don't see the benefit.
The odd lesson here and there, if things are going a bit wrong is fine but again, only if you listen and put into practice what is shown.

I'm a bad practicer at best, have never had a lesson and it's worked OK for me......
That's not to say that method will work for everyone...

I had six lesson between April & June and came down from 16 to 12, not had one since June but had 2 bad rounds and going back for a refresher on Tuesday

In my view .......

Worth it

Agree with this 100%
Some people seem to always be having lessons but their handicap doesn't come down:confused:

Despite much scoffing from some on here I am a big fan of lessons and have had approx 20 since going to my teaching professional in December 2011. I feel I am hitting it much more consistently and playing better and from that point of view it has been money well spent. Granted my handicap has gone up in 2013 but I am still feeling that I have a great score in me but just throw a couple of card killers in on every competitive round I play. They aren't event he same holes or the same problem.

I am going to work more on more on short game over the winter but we will also be looking at changing a couple of key things in my swing that we both feel are holding me back but didn't want to change in the middle of the golfing season. I don't really care what others think. I am happy with the furrow I'm ploughing and have absolute belief that I am on the cusp of getting a swing, unique as it is, that will stand up, and more importantly last and give me consistency for years to come, with only minor tweaks needed if a fault creeps in.

In my opinion, you get out what you put in. Have a lesson and then play expecting a difference will more often than not yield nothing, take it to the practice ground train it and work on it, then play and enjoy the results. However you have to find a pro you understand and speaks in a language that you understand, otherwise your wasting your time. Little odd checks now and then work wonders and stop bad habits creeping in...so yes lessons are worthwhile.

Well said

Ive had a lot of lessons and my non tournament play is very good, put that card in my hand and its a different story. Its my first year of having a handicap so i suppose i cant expect miracles and i dont feel like im enjoying myself in medals im trying to get my handicap down that badly. Is my swing good ? Yes technically im excellent but mentally im shocking. I think they are definitely worth it if your searching for consistency in the long run because you will probably struggle at first.
