I saw that too! Actually the bloke that has invited me has two helicopters and 3 planes and I am not joking!!!!

The event is with David Platt the ex-England footballer. Looks like a good 2 days. The competition is designed to give you an on-tour kind of experience, whatever that means.

Anyway, I am most interested in the courses and any opinions from people that have played there.

(Not that all other posts aren't welcome or of interest!)

Interesting Dodger!

I have a friend who has played it twice now and hes of the opinion that the course doesn't measure up to the hype of the place. He says its a lovely course but not on a par with the likes of Western Gailes, Machrihanish, Cruden etc. What worried me more was the fact that he rates Kingsbarns higher.

It's all down to personal preference.I've played all the courses you mention and outwith Mach I'd say that Fidra matches them all, and if the road didnt disect Dirleton 3/4 times that would be just as good too.

What you get with Archerfield is terrific turf, almost perfect greens, an outstanding club house with levels of service better than anywhere else in Scotland and courses that stand up against pretty much any course I've been lucky enough to play.

I've played fidra maybe 30 times, stand out holes are 2, a nice dogleg par five,8 a deceptivley long par 3 (club up at least one) 10, the best looking hole on the course and layered with bunkers and 18 with it's split fairway.
the closest i've ever come to a hole in one was the par 3 7th on direlton, it was a bawhair from dropping.

Go with an open mind and I guarantee you have a really terrific days golf

Thanks for that - I am looking forward to it now as I am there for two days - 36 holes per day plus am staying in the main house.

Should be great if the weather is good.

I've played both courses and the Dirleton is by far the better of the two. They're not bad but hugely overpriced and the clubhouse has an air of the nouveau riche about it. You'll probably enjoy whichever course you play but there are better in East Lothian.

If you are staying in the house you'll have a blast, it's really something special

I'd disagree with direlton being far better, but it's all about personal preference. And there are indeed better in east lothian, to my mind gullane 1 (and maybe even 2) are the best available, including muirfield.

Thanks for the responses. I am playing at a corporate event as a guest so the course isn't of my choosing.

I may stay an extra day and play at Gullane though as it is on my list and I have never played there.
