Apple iCloud ID & registered devices question

I have an iPad and iPhone which are connected to an Apple ID on icloud etc via a BT email address.

I have just set up a new Apple ID as I wanted an icloud email address and I'm thinking about discontinuing the old one and swapping over everything to the Apple.

Question is - if I register the devices to my new Apple ID can I still have access to previous downloads (music, facetime and books etc.)

I'm not bad on computers but am a bit of an Apple novice and the cloud etc confuses me.

Don't see why not, I would imagine you'd just have to go to your apple account and edit the email address associated with it.
