Had my annual check up this morning. I had RLE (where they replace your lens with a plastic one) about 12 years ago. I've never worn glasses or lenses since, never felt the need to.

The check up didn't reveal any problems with my sight. I mentioned to the optician who is also a golfer that I struggle on long shots to see where golf balls land, and am surprised when my PPs can follow their flight perfectly. He suggested I give contact lenses a go to see if they help. I don't have any issues distance-wise off the golf course.

Just wondering if anyone has tried them specifically for golf and if they helped?

I wear contacts during daily life not just for golf.
What I will say is make sure you use something to cover your eyes.
Trying to see when it’s raining or you get sweat in your eyes is horrible and can make them go a bit fuzzy.
A cap helps but I always keep a tub of Vaseline in the bag and use a tiny bit on the eyebrows so any moisture runs off rather than in the eyes.

I’ve worn lenses for forty years but, following cataract surgery a couple of years ago, I now only have a very slight prescription in one eye, with 20/20 vision in the other.

I only wear one lens now, and even then only for golf. I don’t need one at other times as my eyes together are fine. I do find wearing that one lens helps me see the ball disappearing into the cabbage 250 yards away.

I only wear my contacts for golf. Went down the daily disposable route but no contract just top them up as I need.

Only issue I have is I can’t read my phone comfortably wearing them, so I bought a cheap pair of pince-nez reading glasses for checking messages after a round, that live in my bag.

I have worn contacts for over 30 years and now wear varifiocal lenses, also have 1 eye set more for close and the other more for long distance. Never had an issue when playing golf and not had any problems like @irip mentions.

I used to wear them when playing other sports and always used the vas for then.
Just something I have found useful especially in the rain.
Probably more a mental thing than anything else

Do you wear hair gel (or similar)? Is it this running into your eyes?

Unfortunately for the last 25 years a swimming hat would have been more use to me than hair gel 😂.
I originally used it when playing rugby and at the front of the scrum nobody seemed to listen when you said hang on chaps I need to wipe my brow.
Using Vas helped prevent getting sweat in my eyes and it’s something I have used in other sports

I have a problem with just one eye really.

A few years back the optician suggested trying a contact lens in just that eye. It took me 12 holes to realise it made every putt look like it was left to right 😂 😂

I changed to contact lenses about 25 years ago, mainly because of golf and the rain on spectacles.
I now wear only 1 lens, and alternate it each day. If I wear 2, I cant read, and if I wear none, I cant see. :)

Have you tried varifocal lens? Might solve your issue.

I have bifocal glasses, main section is for distance. If I try to read putts with my glasses on, both sides of the line dip down (like a frown). I started wearing single vision contacts (for distance) about 30 years ago, and wear them for golf only. Put them in when I get to the course, take them out when finished the round. Cannot read with the contacts in, but they're great on course. As someone said above, I use daily wear "disposable" contacts (although they can last about 4-5 rounds) and just order more when I need them. (Daysoft lenses)

I’ve never worn contact lenses, and usually wear varifocal glasses.
However for golf I wear single vision distance glasses.
With the varifocals I was effectively looking down on the ball through the reading glasses part of the lens for my shot. Which meant it was blurred.
It’s much better now, apart from marking the card !!

I moved from glasses to contact lenses late 1980s and golf was the reason…I couldn’t be bothered with rain on my glasses and my glasses steaming up in the searing heat of a Bristol summer 😂

More recently (in last 10yrs), because my eyes were aging, I changed from distance prescription lenses in both eyes to mix of one distance and one close - to support better reading plus distance…but that didn’t work for me on the golf course as I lost distance perception and found it a bit tricky to track my ball if it went off line into rough…so for golf I went back to distance prescription lens in both eyes. Makes reading course planners etc difficult.

I wear contacts for golf, and from time to time at other times in summer when I want to wear normal sunglasses.

I can't wear varifocal contacts (astigmatism) so have to compromise a bit, with one lens sightly weaker so I can still read a scorecard & my phone. Works fine for me and I have recently switched to buying mine online when I need them (a PP is a former optician so gives good advice!).

I have tried playing in my varifocal glasses, but prefer the contacts, especially when putting, even though my specs transition is subtle.

Playing on a windy links course, I actually find that my eyes water less with lenses in than they do if I wear glasses.

I have been a contact lens user for just over 50 years. I usually have a couple of days off a week, using varifocal specs unless I have to drive - I can drive with the varifocals but prefer the contacts. I now have daily-use multifocal lenses so I can see the flight of the ball and also read most things unless it's really small print.

I have astigmatism (not sure how 'severe' but definitely have it) and have been 'trialling' varifocal contact lens for the last three months. Getting on fine with them - but yet to make a final decision on way to go.

In general they do exactly what you'd want them to do - however...the optometrist has made it clear that the prescription for them has to be a compromise - and neither close vision nor distance vision will be perfect in all circumstances.

The compromise we have settled on for me is that they are good for distance (played golf wearing them this morning and able to do my scorecard) - and generally good for reading (as I type I am wearing them and reading what I type)...but in low light conditions they are not so good for reading and at night (in the dark) not so great for driving as a little distance perception is lost and rear lights of cars can glare - still OK for dark driving else optometrist would have to tell me to not wear them when driving at night.

A brand new varifocal lens is coming that has some sort of filter aimed at cutting down the night driving glare issue - hopefully addressing the distance perception - and I'm going to trial them.

They are expensive as they are new tech...and they are expensive to make. Jury is still out for me, but given I'm enjoying and valuing the flexibility that they are giving me (it's great to be able to drive and read the dash and nav) I may well stick with them.

Before wearing contacts I struggled with tracking shots in certain light/weather conditions and also seeing some contours on greens depending on the grain/cut on the greens, this went instantly when I started wearing contacts. I can now follow my PP’s drives even with the big hitters pushing out around the 300 mark, not a prob that I have.

I use the accusoft disposable and have no probs with irritation even in the wind. Both my eyes have stigmatism's also.
