As per the title really.
I usually have a couple of hybrids in my bag but last night I thought I'd give my 5 iron a shot which I only really use for low dinks under trees and stuff.
Creamed quite a few which was a pleasant surprise, I guess I've just never really given enough time to longer irons since I started playing and relied on the hybrids too much.
I have matching 3 and 4 irons which I've dared myself to put in the bag, it could go utterly pear shaped fast but I feel I owe it to myself to at least try.
Anyone successfully made the transition and stuck with it?

If taylormade made an rbz 3 iron I'd be all over it,love my 4 iron, got to be a decent lie though, wouldn't entertain it out of the rough, which I guess is where the hybrid comes in handy.
Give it a chance though.

many teaching professionals including the one and only butch harmon say that all ams should have at least one rescue club in the bag.

those long approaches from the light rough are so much easier with a hybrid. granted a wood could do it too but a hybrid cuts through the rough better for me.

Im thinking of going the other way;)

up untill the start of last year i stil had 2 and 3 irons in the bag, they have been replaced by hybrides, now thinking of a 4 hybrid. I can't remeber the last time i hit s decent shot with it TBH, my old MP62 3/4irons i hit much better:(

The problem for me is that I can hit my 22º hybrid as far as a 3 iron in calm conditions but into the wind, because I hit the ball high, it goes nowhere. Into the wind I grip down on a 3 wood. Out of the rough, however, I can hit the hybrid where, if I took an iron, I'd need a 7 or 8. Worth carrying just for that.

OP why are you thinking you would like irons in place of hybrids? You say you love your 5 hybrid in one of these posts so why change?

Yes I have! I find hybrids very inconsistent good shot bad shot . I have 3/4 irons ap2s they hit the ball better than a hybrid . If I get in the rough I usually play what iron will get me to a good yardage and start again. Into the wind they are useless. But they are great for a chip around the greens. I think if you hit your woods well its worth having one , If you hit long irons well don't its very much how you see your game.

Gradually fell out of love with my rescue and finally managed to remove it a few weeks back, replaced with a 3i and 5w and both of those are much more useful clubs around my course

5 iron's a mid-iron ;)

When I first started, my very first set had a 3 & 4 hybrid. The only shot I could consistently hit with them was a raging hook. Got a very cheap 3 and 4 iron and never looked back.

Most folk on here know I've never been a lover of hybrids (.... And it's still the case). I much prefer the look of an iron behind the ball.

I don't have an issue with a fairway wood or driver sat behind he ball. Just hybrids

That said I was forced to get a 910H to bridge the gap between my 3 iron and 4 wood. On it's day it's a fantastic club, others it's the most destructive in my bag.

I'll stick to long irons thanks.

I have both a 4I and a 4 Hybrid which is change dependent on the course I'm playing and conditions

Being a relative newcomer I have a couple of hybrids 3 and 4, however I've been having trouble with them both recently (down to me I suspect) and gone back to my 5 and 6 irons, getting similar results

You replaced 3 and 4 Hybrids with 5 and 6 irons ?!

leave in the bag what ever works best IMO. if thats hybrids or irons, woods etc. why make the game harder? If its a "macho" thing, screw that, i dont care any more! I have gone from an X-Stiff driver which 3/10 times i could bomb a mile, to a regular shafted driver i hit an OK distance, but straight down the middle.

The game is hard enough as it is, dont go making it harder!

Without a doubt, I don't aim to force myself to use irons just for the sake of it. I have them and spare time at weekends so why not, my playing partner best get his tin hat ready though :fore:

Tried a 17 degree hybrid for 6 months, with a beefy x stiff diamana shaft. Couldn't stop hooking it, have hit a few others since and same story. Always like hitting my 3 and 4 irons, particularly as it's always windy at my place. I've never felt uncomfortable hitting long irons, probably because I grew up hitting them before hybrids came along. Other than from poorer lies, I can't see a need to replace.

In saying that I may have another go at some point if I can find something between 3i and 3 wood
