Our office annual conference is at The Grove and the day after I would have the option to play the course. Just wondered if anyone has played it and if they recommend it.

They have kindly offered to reduce the green fee from £190 to £145. Still expensive in my book but keen to know if it is worth it.

youre going to get a split of opinions on this!

for me no its not worth £150 green fee. personally find the layout a bit bland, very few memorable holes. that said it is usually in impeccable condition, great practise facilities etc

I am playing it on Sunday, for 90. I like it. I have played it a lot. I have never been disappointed playing there.at 140, i am not sure i would though.

for that price I'd rather play the back on black competition they hold there. great course too

I played it in a competition, it was in amazing condition, tees, fairways & greens like carpets. Some very good holes, I particularly liked the tough par 4's 3rd, the 15th and the par 5 17th. The par 3's aren't easy (especially the one that's about 240 yards. The service is excellent, but food & drink are expensive.
As a caveat i played on a dry September day, so I don't know about drainage etc in winter

Its nice enough but a little satanised.

I know Watford's a bit grim, but that's a bit harsh...

Agree with previous comments - immaculately kept, but not worth that much to play. I'd get in the car and go to moor park, west herts or down to Hadley wood and pocket the change.

played lots if times, mostly when someone else has paid.

I really like it . Great condition as the others have said. Depending on your view about golf courses, worth playing at least once, depending on how solvent you are.

Last visit, wife and I were doing some work for a "market research agency." Brief was to play, have breakfast before and lunch after." Had to write a detailed report, but were able to reclaim all costs... I think the total bill was approaching £500! The overriding feeling was, lovely experience, lovely conditioning course.... but for that money I could get a weekend in the Algarve!

Played it several time courtesy of GM (so never paid) and really enjoyed it. I found it enjoyable without being ever standing out although having said that, there were some decent holes. Quality and service were top class too and having stayed there with HID, it permeates through to the hotel side of things as well. For me, £145 is a lot of wedge to play and not sure it really warrants that price

If you like American style parkland courses it is one of the better examples in this country but I don't think it is worth the green fee. £190/145 gets you onto some much better courses IMHO.

I played there in an HSBC betterball pairs stableford. My partner and i stonked it round and won by a decent margin, so i have to say i loved it. I also was there on the first day Tiger eagled the 18th back when. I would be reluctant to pay £140 for a round now as ive played better courses for less but its certainly a course to have ticked off

Im glad I played it (Thanks GM) and it is only 15 minutes drive away, but not in any rush to play it again, unless another freebee presents itself.

No doubt about it ,the service is excellent, and the course is always in good condition and presented well, its just not that memorable

Also on site, Colette's is a lovely restaurant. We had the tasting menu with matching wines, all of which was fantastic.

I've played it a number of times and always enjoy it. It is always in fantastic condition, and the practice areas are great. I would not pay over £100 to play it though.

Best course in Portugal:thup:

It's a decent course - always in good condition but a bit bland for me

Anything over £100 is a waste

thanks for all the responses. I'm getting the impression that it probably isn't worth it, which is what I thought but wanted to be sure.
Our conference is not until the Summer so a few months away.
