Can anyone offer an opinion on East Berks whether a member or having just played there? I have looked at the web reviews which all sound good but it would be good to hear more. It's renewal time & I am looking around.
Thanks.

I think it's a very nice course. I've played there probably 10-15 times in inter-club matches over the years. It's not a monster lengthwise but has a very well established parkland / heathland in places feel.

It has a very pleasant "flow" through the landscape from one hole to the next and there are no repeats or up-down-up-down boring bits as such. Particularly benign first to get you settled in and some very nice holes too.

Well worth playing to see what you think I'd say.

Played it some time ago.

Pleasant enough (actually, quite enjoyable) without being something to rave about. Fairly short and on not much acreage, so had to be careful on a couple of fairways. Balls going into housing on 1 hole was a problem then, but possibly resolved now.

First time I saw a 'one-handed, left-handed' putting technique - by a past winner of The Brabazon Trophy!

Nice clubhouse environment!

Could be a good reason to join if you spray the ball off the tee! You will soon learn to hit the ball straighter.
Hasn't worked for me at Blackmoor.

I think PNWokingham has played East Berks a few times, but he may only be able to tell you about the trees and undergrowth.

Watching this thread as EB is on my shortlist too as its only 5 mins from my house and if I am honest its the front runner at the moment for me.

A few of us from our old course (which is closing next month) are looking to have a trial round there soon (I will send you a PM)

I looked at North Hants and its perfect except its outside my budget :( not helpful that they just put their prices up!!

The first course I ever played. Family connection as my dad grew up virtually on the course and was an artisan member either side of WW2. I think it was his favourite place on Earth. It is also one of mine. I have played it many times and would go back many more.

As others have said, not long and rewards precise golf but the 3rd, 7th, 13th, 14th and 17th all require a good long game if you want to make par - absolutely cracking holes that would not be out of place on a top 50 course. No two holes the same and every department of your game will be tested. Generally find when I've played it I've used every club in the bag.

They have done a lot of work in recent years with new bunkers and restoring the heather areas. If I lived nearer I wouldn't hesitate. Never seen it in bad nick but a few years ago some of the greens were damaged and may not quite be back to their best. I wouldn't let that put you off though.

Not sure that he has, I remember him saying that he too lives very close but despite that has never played it. Maybe he has since I dont know but for the OP as well it will be good to hear his feedback.

Sounds great Mike.

Hi Sean - no still not played - must do it in the coming year - great location. I have had a look and it looks a very nice course - undoubtedly on a small site and may be a bit tight for some without my precision and control :D

It flies in the face of the modern trend that a course has to be long to be any good. It's tight and requires skill to play it well. Several pretty short Par 3s for example.

But then again, I've yet to play any easy course... anywhere!

Lovely course, I usually play an open there each year but it was canned last year due to lack of interest. It is always in good nick but they had been having trouble with a couple of the greens which were "vandalised" several years back and they were struggling to get back as of Sept 2013. Even that doesn't detract too much from the overall quality though.

If you can't hit driver straight, leave it in the car

Top golf course, was in fantastic condition when i played it last July.

As previously mentioned there are a couple of greens they had relaid 8-10 i believe.

Many thanks for all the replies gentlemen, I am going to have a look soon. Does anyone know how well East Berks drains especially in winter, does it get boggy?
