So after posting a thread earlier in the year asking for advice on whether for my 40th birthday I should go and play some top courses or treat myself to some brand new clubs I have finally made a decision. Despite the poll result being almost 2 to 1 in favour of the top courses I'm ignoring all the advice and I am going to get myself a new set of bats instead and today was looking at a set of Wilson Staff C100 irons..........

They felt really good in my hands and to my eye looked good in the address position. I haven't hit them yet as I'm going back next week to try some out (not to American Golf as I'm supporting my local pro) and will hopefully also try hitting the Ci11 irons as well.

Does anyone currently play Wilson Staff irons and how do you get on with them? And what is the difference between the C100's and the Ci11's?

My playing partner uses FG Tours. Stunning irons and I really wish I had taken the demo set I found him online for £200

Guess what those are in my avatar. FG Tour V2's and I won't be changing them in a hurry.

Wilson Staff clubs are generally very good.

Wilson clubs (i.e. non Staff) may not be quite so good as they tend to be aimed at the budget end of the market and the component parts can reflect this.

If you're going to be spending £400 on a new set of irons, I'd definitely advise finding a decent coach with a launch monitor, and get fitted, be so worth it!

not irons, but i have just got a FG Tour Hybrid and i am very impressed with the club, the quality etc. Wilson Staff are an under rated brand, buddy of mine plays their irons and he loves them.

You wont go wrong with them, but dont just buy online because they look nice etc, go and hit as many as you can with an open mind

All the Wilson Staff stuff I've tried has been very impressive, just not a "fashionable" brand atm.

I've got FG Tour V2 irons that I'd still be using if I wasn't offered my Cobra irons.

Have an FG Tour gap wedge that is every bit as good as Cleveland and Vokey IMO and will look at the newer versions when I'm replacing all my wedges after winter.

The FG Tour (and X) balls, along with the DX2 and DX3 I've used and like them aswell.

I like the look of the new hybrids and fairway woods but not tried them....... yet :)

If you like the clubs then buy them. Ignore fashion (unless you think you might for some reason want to resell them and recoup as much of your outlay as possible). I have a set of John Letters irons. Love them. Lovely some sweet feel. very unfashionable brand - but what do I care if they do the job and make me feel good :)

I have the ci11's. Got 4-Pw for £230. Traded in my old Razr x for £150 so they were a bargain. Great club to look down at which was my main reason for wanting a change. Would love to have given the FG Tour V2 a shot but out of my price range. most reviews I read at the time said the differnence in forgiveness between the Ci11 and the FG Tour V2 was minimal and the ci11 was in a bit of a no mans land regarding target market.

As far as I'm aware the C100 are minor improvements on the Ci11. There wasn't a discernable enough difference between them and the Ci11 for me to want to pay the extra. From now on I think I'll stick to older models when changing and save the money while not really harming the performance greatly.

Agree with your philosophy on older models.

That's how I got my current FG Tour V2's. They were being sold by a shop on ebay on an auction basis, I noticed them with 10 mins to go and only one bid of £200, 1 min to go and I stuck in a max bid of £250 and got them for £230.

Happy as a pig in muck! Had their authenticity checked as well.

I don't usually get lucky like that.

Here's the GM verdict of the C100s from recent testing: http://www.golf-monthly.co.uk/reviews/irons/wilson-staff-c100-irons

I had a chance to hit these when they were launched and they are lovely clubs, especially given the price comparison to other brands. Were I not in the fortunate position of working at a golf mag and getting the odd bit of free gear, I'd probably opt for Wilson because they deliver such a good combination of quality and value.

Totally agree. The pricing is brilliant. Being a smaller name they don't hold the value of the bigger names either so then there are plenty of real bargains to be had. Very good for us consumers at least.

Got a set of the Pi5 irons from circa 2005 and they are still lovely. Had the lofts and lies checked at Christmas and even after all that time only one of the lofts had altered by one degree. Clearly well made and recently tried the new ones at a demo day and they were just as lovely but couldn't justify the cost for what is effectively the same club. The ball was flying the same with the same flight and distance with both clubs.
So if you want to save yourself some money just find a club you like the look of from the Wilson Staff range and go for them, you won't be disappointed!

Wilson make some nice equipment. I'm thinking of changing my irons and the FG Tour V2's are certainly a set I'd be having a look at. The FG wedges look nice too

Wilson used to be a top brand, but in the noughties went through a bit of a slump. The whole Fat Shaft thing was a bit of a disaster.

They have come out of it now and offer some nice clubs at a lower price point than the bigger names.

I think here lies the issue, to many people associate the staff stuff with the cheap deep red fat shaft crack that's churned out by American golf..... Exclusively. I can see cheap gear quick profit for people getting into the game but you have to thing that the DR/fat shaft range has devalued the staff brand somewhat,

I agree that the fat shaft seemed to kill the brand and it is a brand that AG will foist on newbies or the unsuspecting. Nothing wrong with Wilson as a brand (more the AG sale technique). I can remember back into the 80's when they were actually a brand to aspire to, especially their bladed models

Ooo-errr I had better put my hands over the ears of my DRs that I acquired secondhand when i started playing 5 years ago, still they have served me well and secured various prizes for me on Society days.
They will be even more upset tomorrow when my wife buys me a new set of probably D-100s based on how happy I have been with my irons Wilson Wedges, 3 Wood, Hybrid, and Driver (all bought new over the years). The Driver I tested on the range against every driver in the shop when I made the purchase, even the guy helping me couldn't argue that in my hands that it was the best of the bunch.
The Deep Red set policy makes sense if it gets folks on their way in golf, and if someone like me develops a brand loyalty as a result then it's happy days for Wilson, especially if you aren't brand driven.
Buys a couple of dinners out too compared to buying a brand that advertises and sponsors heavily, yet in the hands of mere mortals don't go any further than a set of better priced Wilsons.

Well today I've had a bit of a result and it looks like I could get the best of both worlds. Having decided that I would go for the new clubs over playing a top course I've just one a free 4 ball at The Grove in a Twitter competition. Look out Rooter I'm after your crown as the king of the Twitter freebie.
