I have been looking at Golf Empire site, and a few clubs are starting to release some of their Open dates for 2012.

I fancy playing in some this year, as it looks like a good way to play some good courses competitively for a good price.

Anyone on here planning the same?

I'd love to play in a pairs open with someone this year provided it's a weekend gig (no holiday left) and not too expensive (wedding to pay for and have already committed to Woodhall, Woburn and Camberley Heath, so those to pay for also)

Not that I don't like playing on my own, but enjoy the craic of pairs golf.

I am always amazed at opens being available for hackers (sorry, make that handicap golfers). At my club it is cat 1 only, and then it is done by handicap, so a lot of the 4 point something's don't get in.

Apparently there is one at woburn. You need to be off two or less to stand a chance of getting in.

Then there was Hever castle last year, which had some 20 handicaps in the field. Bizarre. They won too.

I am not currently planning on entering any, as round my way you need to be a good golfer, which I am not, and also I want to see how my swing develops before I commit to too many comps.

I have been looking at possibly playing the Cooden Beach Bowl. It's played over a weekend and you play at least 3 rounds and possibly a 4th if you reach the final.

Agreed,

I have looked at some of the "better" clubs and they are cut off at 2 and below.

Yes, I am going to enter some.

The Bournemouth open clashes with my little boys b/day but I'm going to do the gents pairs at Wareham. Also there is a Wessex tour in Dorset/Wiltshire/Devon. I may play a couple of these events. I also quite fancy the Volvo tour, it quite pricey but the venues are top notch.

Oh yes, I play in about 10-15 a year.

When I was on holiday in Kent last year I played in 2 at Princes (for about £35.00 each) and one at Littlestone.
Princes have an open week where they have a few on. Normal green fees are about £70.00 for Princes, from memory. I'd advise trying them. One was mdeal the other was Stableford, but they were over different nines (they have 27 holes). I am not sure if they have upper handicap limits though (I am off 9), but got in them all.

Got a 3 rd in one of the Princes and a 3rd in the Littlestone, £25 and £50 vouchers, and both were with only getting 34 and 35 stableford points respectively.

I'm hoping to enter the Bournemouth Open 36 hole comp on the 8th June, played both courses before but never in this competition. Other than that on the reserve list for the TT

the 72 hole comp is by all accounts a bit of a slog, so the 36 in one day on the 8th is a wise choice. I'd join you but I'll be up to my elbows in birthday cake.

I played Meyrick and Queens recently. Meyrick is OK and scrubs up well for the open. Queens Park has seen better days :(

How about this one.
21 handicap or lower.

Princes is one im on the lookout for, as Smiffy mentioned it last year. Having played it a few weeks back, I would love to go back at those prices.

When I get my new club diary I am planning to see what "opens" don't clash with club "gold letter comps" and maybe enter a few

im doing a few, cruden bay 4day challange £80 for 4 rounds of golf, carnoustie tassie£195 6rounds, royal dornoch open weekend in april (still looking for 2 people in handicap range 13-24)

royal cinque ports open week normally £120 a round £40 a round in there golf week, and vale of langollen golf week, champange golf at lemonade prices

i plan on playing as many as possible this year.

the one i am looking forward to the most is the crieff gents open and the crieff 36 hole open.the 36 hole open is open to players off 7 or lower and the good thing about that is the css usually goes up :)

the course is awesome, the condition is superb and it has everything......and for 2 rnds for £20 you can't go wrong.

i have a mate who wants to play as many aswell so he says we can share the driving but whether he sticks to it or not i don't know,he let me down for the gents open at crieff.

any opens running in northern ireland this year? im a 16handicapper,should be single figures come april may time.

so probably couldnt cope with the likes of royal portrush or royal count down just yet!! but very interested in playing a few opens around NI. 2 or maybe 3.

Ive played in 2 at Vale of Llangollen, great course, but the greens were crap both times.

Now there's confidence for you just about halving your handicap in the worst three months of the year weather wise, good luck.

If you find any opens give me a shout quite fancy playing a few different tracks.

I was on hols the first 2 weeks in August, so presume their open week will be around the same time as last year. Littlestone's open was only around £20-25, but also a very good test. The back 9 has 7 into the prevailing wind, and the last 3 are so hard.Enjoyed it though. I also played Canterbury down there which was a very nice, but tough parkland course, but it wasn't in an open though.

I will be playing in as many as I can this year. Great value for money and the chance to play some superb courses. Cooden have an "Open week" to celebrate their centenary year and whilst I wouldn't want to play in all of the competitions down there (mixed foursomes etc.) I will try to play in a couple of the singles/betterball games.
I played in opens at Seaford, Littlestone, Orsett and Tyrrells Wood last year and plan to do the same again this year.
Also played in a Seniors Open at Dale Hill (Woosnam course) but bugger that again...it was too hard!

my mate told me im not positive enough so im giving it a go lol

anyhow my last 4 rounds have been 40points 42points (terrible wind and rain at a good links course) 24pts(9hole comp winner parkland mush) and 47pts (again parkland mush). and thats just in the last week and a half.

got to keep pushing to improve, i see my ability probably topping out at about 6-8 ish but we will see. Brendy is a good player id like to be that good, or as good as my mate(dreams)

if you hear of any up here that you fancy travelling too give me a shout aswell. maybe we could go play Bangors Open with the Brendy boyo himself.
