tested some different shafts out last week and the pro said "s300 r a stiff shaft most popular shaft on tour!" . Somehow I just duidnt believe this and I think he was just spinning it so that he could get an easy sell on some irons that were standard setup. Is he right? Also what do people think about s100 Dynamic golf shafts?

S300 is still popular for some players on Tour, but I would think that S400 or particularly X100 are much more popular. Even Luke Donald, who has a slowish swing, uses S400 Tour Issue.

If he said that Dynamic Gold was most popular, that would be true.

Project X are also pretty popular, and the PX equivalent to S300 is the 5.5. Most PX you will see on tour will be closer to 6.5 in flex, so similar to X100. KBS stiff is also at least as stiff as S300, and most Tour players using KBS use X.

Most pros that I seen at the open had rifle shafts, didn’t see a lot with DG although they are good shafts. I also know there are way too many club golfers playing with stiff shafts and they’re not getting the best from them. Get your swing speed checked out elsewhere and be sure what flex is right for you.

swing speed recommended the x100 but the pro said he wouldnt go that stiff. Kind of felt like this defeated the point if he was just gunna go against what the machine said anyway. It was 94mph with a 6 iron

94 mph 6 iron is fast, and would equate to around 110mph driver speed, which is only slightly slower than average Tour speed, but still pretty respectable, and could definitely be in X shaft territory all right.

Depends how you flight it, though, and if you have a smooth tempo, you could get away with softer, say S400, maybe?. At that speed, I would recommend going to a fitter experienced in dealing with players with fast swings. The average pro shop might not have that experience and a good fitter can also put in intermediate flexes, say halfway between S400 and X100.

is there a facility (not just net/machine) where you are to hit the irons you want with both shafts in and get a proper feel for ball flight, carry, how they feel etc.

i have rifle flighted 6.5s but must have hit 200+ shots with demo clubs before I was happy it was the right shaft. Ultimately youre making pretty much the biggest equipment decision you will make (shafts more important than heads imo and this is 7-9 of your clubs)

i think its quite quick so he said my driver swing speed is around 116mph and i need to get that sorted aswel but im trying to do one thing at a time and the irons are first on the agenda. When i picked the x100s up they were sooo heavy, i was surprised and i didnt get a good feeling from them at all. However from what he showed me on the screen i was a reasonable distance above the average stiff shaft so im confused. I think i need somewhere with more experance i agree and really need to consider my options more on the shafts even tho he offereed me a decent deal on the clubs

116, I stand corrected, comfortably in the middle of Tour player speed.

If you find X100 heavy, and they are, you could look at a lighter weight but equally firm shaft, such as Project X, say 6.5, or KBS, say X flex, maybe soft stepped once.

Soft (or hard) stepping are techniques where a shaft can be fitted into an intermediate flex. This can be a way of taking a bit off a shaft that feels just a bit too firm.

Precision Golf in Egham, Surrey would be a great place for you to go. They fit Tour players and handicappers and know the upper end of the market very well.

KBS seems popular i think i am going to have a go of these shafts. It is concerning me as i think a lot of people are just trying to sell me anything just to get my money rather than taking the time to see what is actually best for me. Unfortunatly im up in newcastle so i really need somewhere around here that has a gud reputation and can be trusted.

OK, for a start, find somewhere that has the Mizuno Swing DNA system, with the shaft optimser, and that will give you an idea of suitable shafts taking more than swing speed into account.

Then you can look for somewhere that will do a fitting. The only places I know are near London, but I am sure there is somewhere closer. You could always go up to the Mizuno Scottish fitting place in Cumbernauld, near Glasgow. Closer than London!

I play project x 6.0 hard stepped once and have almost exactly the same clubhead speed as you. I came from s300's which were too soft and also span too much. I was recommended the 6.5's before I switched but wanted something slightly softer. I love the ball flight they give me it's higher then the dynamic gold but doesn't ballon.

I've also just bought an 8 degree Ping i15 with a Project X 6.5 graphite shaft, it's unbelievable how much better I'm hitting it. I'd go for a fitting at a reputable centre if you get chance they will be able to go through all the options and help you settle on whatever works best for your swing.

Not sure what my irons have but they are nice. Callaway rifle shafts that say "Tour Stiff".

If anyone knows what this equates to then I'd be interested to hear as they are certainly the best irons / shafts I have ever played with, hence keeping them for 5 years+.

It would be good to know what this means in terms of the modern jargon, just in case I change them in the near future.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

Snelly.

I actually had the guy fit me with the mizuno fitting center and that special club but he still recommended against it! i still dont know what to do.

SImonC - how do you find the driver and shaft? i too am looking for the exact same setup as yourself with the ping i15. I hit it ridiculously high and struggle alot with ballooning shots and i was hoping a similar driver would give me a real penetrating flight

In that case, he must have thought you were not flighting the ball the way you needed, or the speed was variable or something. What you can do is ask him if it is possible to get a set with something in between, say PX 6.0, but if they prove to be too soft in play, have them adjusted later. A good fitter will adjust the fit if it is not quite right.

What is your tempo like - smooth (Ernie Els) or fast (Sergio Garcia)?
