For me the problem has been and remains the gap between my 24 degree hybrid and 15 degree 3 wood. Clearly something around 20 degrees is necessary but have tried various 3 iron hybrids but lack the consistency with them, tried a Fybrid but just do not click with it for some reason (perhaps because I do not feel that the Grafalloy Red shaft suits me)and have tried a number of 5 woods but either do not like the head shape (like a shallow face) or find that they hit the ball a bit too far and are too similar to my 3 wood in distance. Anyone have similar gaps that they just cannot fill?

I've got a gap between my 18deg hybrid and my 4 iron, I just live with it as I carry a gap wedge and a lob wedge to use my quota of 14. If I need to hit it in the gap I normally go down the grip on my hybrid or try to hit the 4 iron hard if it's downwind.

Interesting gap.

Despite all the hybrid / fairway options available. You still have a gap!? I'd of thought that this area was one where the market is saturated with possibilites. Perhaps there are too many choices, and it just makes it all the more confusing.

It also depends on your swing. If like me you tend to close the face down, then a 20 degree ain't a 20 when it hit's the ball. Which is why I've dropped both my driver and 17 degree hybrid. The 3 wood has become my driver and the 20 is my 17. if that makes sense.

What I guess I'm saying is, don't rely on the loft angle printed on the club to fill the gap. Try some different types fairways, hybrids and driving irons, and see where they end up distance wise.

(Should update my sig really!)

Strange one if only they made an iron with a 3 on it

You would not really be teased too much if you used a 7 wood. :p

Yes I could get a 3 iron or a more lofted hybrid but that would mean having to leave out one of the wedges which I don't want to do so I am happy to live with the gap. I would rather have my wedges that I use several times a round than a 21 deg hybrid that I might use once.

I don't know about CANNOT FILL but I could do with a couple more vokeys :) I only use a 56° at the moment and would probably be better off with a 54° and a 60°.

If it were me I really wouldn't worry about it too much. Let's put it this way:

Say you hit your 3 wood about 230, and your 24* hybrid about 185 you would have a middle of approximately 208 yards. The first thing I would consider is how often do you find yourself this far away from the green on a hole? My feeling is this, as a highish handicapper (I've forgotten what you play off- sorry), when you are far enough out to require the yardage this gap filling club would provide, you are going to hit the green say 1 in 10 shots, 3/4 in 10 if you have a decent long game? Therefore would it not be wiser to in this instance, 208 yards from the green, use your reliable hybrid to get you 185 yards up the fairway and pitch on / putt for a bogey (on a long par 4 when you need to go for the green this would be more than acceptable), rather than buy that perfect 5 wood or whatever which will more often than not land you in the crap anyway. Any par 4 which requires such a long shot anyway will inevitably have a low stroke index so you will have shot/s to play with and no real need to gamble. Stick with your 3 wood to play safe on tee shots where the driver isn't an option, and lay up with the hybrid when you find yourself at a yardage within the gap- or if in a do or die matchplay situation choke down on the 3 wood pitch it short and run it up- I doubt you would be able to pitch on and hold the green with an 'inbetween' club anyway. Plus you can save yourself some money doing this :D

I hope this does make some kind of sense, and of course it is just in my not so knowledgeable opinion so feel free to disregard it and laugh at me :)

there are no gaps as such as i can play very well with my set and only have the trickier bunker shots to overcome. however there are spaces that i would like to try for example a scotty cameron and a g10 21*

I dont have much of a gap anymore

I used to carry a 3 wood which went 240+ so right up there with the driver which seemed pointless. And a 21degree hybrid which goes 210 so quite a gap

So now changed the 3w to a 17 degree 4 wood which goes 225ish so the gap is well spaced

With 3 wedges in the bag i only carry 13 clubs although have the option of carrying a 60 i just dont bother all the time

Personally i dont like having too many headcovers in the bag just enough to get the job done

Don't have any gaps. My 3 wood goes about 220, 5 wood goes about 200, my 3 hybrid about 180 and my 4 iron about 165-170

At the bottom end my PW is good for 100 yards with aa nice smooth swing, my 52 goes around 75 and my 58 degree wedge about 50. I'm working on the clock facce drill to get swings to fill those gaps using my wedges.

I'm with Eaglehunter on this one. I've got a 3 wood/5 wood/24*hybrid for longer shots and 4 wedges for the short ones. So a bit of a gap from 5 wood to hybrid and also from hybrid to 5 iron. I know I'm unlikely to hit the green from more than 200 out so why bother having a club that'll more often than not leave me with a chip'n'putt when I can use what I've already got and do the same thing.

The frustration is that I hit hybrids and fairway woods pretty well (often better than my long irons) but I just cannot get on with 19/20 degree hybrids. I can hit a 5 wood pretty well but the problem remains that the distance seems to be very similar to my 3 wood. Perhaps part of the issue is that I am not getting the distance that I should with my 3 wood (about 200 yards) and that is why the 5 wood distances are similar.
Thinking about it, the gap between driver and 3 wood should be more of a concern as the driver goes about 230-240. Might even be time for a re-think at that end of the bag.

All very interesting.

I have no glaring gaps anymore, but I've messed around with all sorts recently.

If you don't like 19/20 hybrids why not consider a "classic" 7 wood.

I have all sorts that come in and out of my bag. I used a real 3i the other day and got on with it just fine. I also have a 2i, but it's probably not as easy to hit as the 3 and is only 1 degree less.

I have a 9 wood for white tee games and have just picked up a proper 4i to use instead when I'm just out and playing.

The problem with 3w and 5w off the fairway going similar distances is i.m.o. fairly common.

Tell more.....
