Get wound up at work about it all the time
I started golf about a year ago

I went out, played a few rounds decided I wasn't improving and didnt know what I was doing wrong, so I had a course of lessons, maybe 7 or 8 just to make sure I wasn't doing anything terribly wrong, now I've gone back to playing again trying to put to use the new information I have regarding playing the game of golf

Apparently that's all wrong and what I should've done is play for 20 years and improving through trial and error and develop bizarre swings and techniques like everyone else at work

I take it the guys you work beside are all scratch golfers ? ;)

Haha laugh it off mate, there must be only one reason they are saying it because you are now a better golfer and scoring better than you.

Nothing wrong with banter but you can see when someone clearly means it and almost begrudges you for paying a pro!

Keep at it mate

It was really only to try and make sure I wasn't doing anything stupidly wrong

Plan on finding my own swing etc from now I k ow I set up right

these are no doubt the same guys that would go to great lengths to explain to you why you shouldn't date the most attractive woman in the world.........

just smile at them and enjoy the inevitable success.

A driver at my work has been playing for years and ripped it out of me for getting custom fitted irons and golf lessons, he asked if because of the money I spent did I think I could beat him, my answer was no but take your wallet and clubs and will see what you have, I won by 6 strokes and that was scoring 103, he penalised me for everything cost me shots for knocking the ball off the tee, miss swings out a bunker etc but I took them and instead of a pint and a handshake afterwards he had to go home, made my week and I just become transport manager so he ain't to chuffed!!

Surely it's the same as everything though golf lessons aren't different from football training learning to drive or even getting trained to do a job at work

Glad to hear it mate, he sounds a right tool!

It's not the easiest game to play, even though it seems it

I just wanted to make sure I was setting up correctly and self diagnose almost what I'm doing wrong, or at least know what I've done wrong when I hit a poor shot

I get the same grief at work you seem to, from guys who have been hacking round for years, "I'll beat you" well yes of course you will you've been playing for years :)

If they've got the ill beat you attitude then good luck to them, idiots tho IMO. You know what score your happy with & what you aim is.

They're definitely trying to wind me up, it doesn't work

Just seems odd to be sooo against lessons

It's called banter and it is an often used method of getting to know someone better and making friends with them.
It works best when it is reciprocal.

It goes something like this;
'oh mate, you definitely need to get some more lessons in, weren't you paying attention at the time'
'hahaha (acknowledge the banter). good one. Paid just enough attention when the pro said he wouldn't want to have to teach dummies like you' hahaha

The ball is now back in their court and they will return it with another bit of banter.
Trust me, it is fun!

Lessons don't initially make you a better player, but at least you know that your doing things right. If people make fun of you cos of that then i think they are the ones missing out, cos they know that one day you will be better than them.
