Looking at their website they have a seniors open there later in the year, looks good value for money.
Has anybody played the course before? Worth the trip????
Cheers

Nope but I had an email today from Golfempire, they have a 36 hole open in August. Quick look at the course and I'm tempted to go for it :)

Does look nice doesn't it mate. Reading reviews, they say it's a bit leggy around there which would rule me out of 36 but the seniors is only 18 so I reckon that would suit. £35.00 including grub. Cushty. Bring on the wrinklies!

It does, have you looked at the website gallery? £50 for the 36 holer including brekkie, lunch and high tea!

I think it's got to be done................

Very nice course, normally with lightning greens.

Some nice heathland holes on the front 9 which finishes with a Par 5 I came close to getting an Albatross on once. Back 9 is somewhat less memorable open parkland but a couple of hilly ones make it 'interesting'. 1st hole is an uphill Par 3, so be warmed up!

That 36-holer for £50 seems a bargain.

played there a few times - enjoyed it . on the front 9 holes quite tight & hilly - back nine more open parkland.

At my level of golf, the front 9 is one of the most challenging you will find on a "parkland" course. Course knowledge and management are paramount. You have to know where to put the ball from the tee, and do it. On the back 9, although a regular parkland course, the tee to green is almost as tough as the front with some blind tee shots and elevation changes.

Getting to the green is only the first part of the challenge. The greens are usually wickedly fast and some, OK most, have some wicked borrows that aren't easily noticed. Once you have settled on your line, allow for more borrow.

Overall a good course, nice clubhouse, and never had a problem with food (although a liver and bacon one visit could have done with a bit more cooking) but if you want to put in a competetive score you will need to have played it before the Open there.

Funnily enough I was chatting this evening with a friend who is a member there. I'm sure that he wouldn't mind signing us in if you wanted a practice round there.

Sounds like a plan Rog. Thanks for the offer.
With Gordons 36 holer due in August and the Seniors Comp due early September maybe we could sort something out a bit nearer the time, say May/June when the course should be at it's best?
Would be a nice friendly fourball!

Used to play in the Men's Open there for many years - nice course with a pretty tough opening stretch.

1st is a tricky par 3, and the 2nd then plays up and over a crest - haven't played for many years so I'm not sure how far modern drivers would get you up the hole, but it used to be that almost whatever you hit off the tee from 4-iron to driver would end up in the same place as drives would roll back down the slope if you didn't make it to the top! 3, 4 and 5 are then impossibly tight from my memory.

The 9th is another interesting hole - a par 5 that plays along the top for about 280-300 yards I guess, and then rolls steeply down towards the green. I remember playing once in very firm conditions and getting a drive up and over the top and trundling down to 8-iron pitch and run distance from the green - others actually drove the green that day I believe!

As others have suggested, the back nine isn't quite as good, but still a very nice place to play. Don't know if it still is, but the clubhouse used to be a sort of quadrangle affair with the putting green right in the middle which was always great for the odd post-round putting challenge to recoup any losses.

Until recently, I was a member for many years. Generally its in fantastic condition. The greens will be really fast for the mens open - to the point where certain parts of some greens are a no no.
Its far too tight for me though, you can run up a big number at any moment hitting it where I am liable put it!
Certainly worth the day out as the greens are up there with Walton Heath - but as said, have a look before the day - and no woods on 3, 4, and 5! Avoid a big accident and you will do well as its not long (about 6400 yards).
And there's a new pro there from this year - John Good (ex Beckenham) who is a really good guy.
PM me if you want more info.
Matt

Thanks for all of the information lads.
So would you say it's a little "quirky".....a bit like The Addington?
I have played the Addington a few times, and whilst I wouldn't go as far as to say "Mickey Mouse" I did find a few of the holes a little strange, and certain parts of the course a little "unfair".
Whilst it was an experience, I certainly wouldn't want to play all of my golf around there.
I have read that the greens are "super quick" but that doesn't really bother me....I actually prefer faster greens!

No, I don't think it's quirky - certainly not in the same league as the two or three holes at The Addington that would fit that description (the 90 degree dogleg on the front nine, and then that long hole with the kind of terraced fairway where you can get severely penalised for a perfect drive). One or two 'interesting' holes at the Palace, but I wouldn't have it down as quirky.

The Addington is definitely 'quirky'. I wouldn't describe it as 'unfair' but can understand why some people do!

Addington Palace is much more 'normal' though there are enough blind shots and other features that a 'scouting' round would be beneficial!
