Anybody had a golf ball fitting

The pros always say that the golf ball is the most important piece of equipment as you use it on every shot. Has anyone been fit properly for the right ball for their game?

Also does anyone know if a ball with a big scuff is liable to fade draw more (like cricketers or baseball pitchers ball tampering)?

I have been told by experts on this board (that's everyone but me ) that I can use just about whatever half decent ball I like unless I am a Cat 1 player and fancy getting to scratch or better.

I had a ball fitting at both American Golf and at the Titleist stand at the golf show once. Both were free, the AG one was actually part of a thing that Golf Monthly filmed a few years back. Titleist told me either the Prov1 or 1X. AG suggested the AD333 Tour or DX3 Urethane.

It's up to you how you think a ball should feel really. I often look at what a ball is supposed to do (low / high spin, low / high ball flight etc) to match up to my game (need help with driver height). Saying that, all 4 balls I was fitted for would be good for my game.

I personally think that the person who would benefit most is someone who plays either whatever they find on the course or just buys the cheapest rocks they can find online. Most average players can pick an average ball and be happy.

I remember doing a Titleist one on line basically they ask you a few questions and your preferred ball was given and a backup ball also.

I also remember GM doing one in the mag for handicaps ranging from Scratch to 28 and most of the chosen choice was Prov1 orProv1x so to me its pointless.

Choose a ball that is round they all go a good distance,go to the green see how they roll out because that will be different depending on the ball being soft or hard or a 2 piece to a 4 piece and your done.

My best rounds have all been with a battered ball.

Find one that you like for whatever reason.

E.g one that sounds good when you nail it, or looks nice, or has a certain characteristic you think will help your game.

Essentially, anything that gives you that little bit of additional confidence when you're standing over it.

I go for something mid range, Bridgestone E6 was my favourite.

i had a fitting by Bridgestone at Silvermere.i was fitted for the E6 ,although my usual nike ball came out with the figures that the E6 did ,

I went on the GM Titleist ball fitting and my ball was the Pro V1.

As said above, most people on the day were either Pro V1 or V1X, whatever their handicap. I don't see this as a marketing ploy, just the fact that the best ball will be better for you, whatever your handicap.

It's then a matter of can justify paying the higher price, may not be the case for a higher handicap player who has a high turnover of lost balls per round but if they can afford it then why not?

My advice would be to go for the best ball in your price range, most premium balls are pretty similar, although many golfers will have a preference based things like feel or sound, particularly when it comes to putting.

unless the greens are rock hard i use any ball. i think the whole thing is a big con. always makes me chuckle when a hacker looses 6 pro v golf balls in a round and then says he doesn't like the Taylormade burner I'm using because they "balloon" on him.

Went on the GM fit and got Pro V1x but to be honest I'll use most premium balls (in summer) although my preferred ball has been the AD333 Tour since it came out. I don't really hold that much stock on the value of a fitting for a mid handicapper

Buy a few sleeves of ones you think might work and pick the best.

Whatever ball takes your fancy, just buy enough of them to play regularly with the same ball and get really used to its characteristics

Weirdly perhaps for many here - as long as I am playing a half decent ball I have never put any characteristics of my strike; ball flight or landing etc down to the ball.

Maybe that's simply come from learning to play the game on a municipal course playing whatever balls I had found - I only ever got a new ball for Christmas and never bought any. The only one I didn't use - unless it was the only ball left in my bag that wasn't cut to bits - was a Price's Everlasting - because it was sooo obvious just a rubber thing. In fact when I was a kid I had no real compunction against using balls that were a bit cut if that's all I had. And plenty of times that was all I had.

And when you've had to play cut-up balls, any uncut ball feels and flies the same - and feels great.
