Our tumble drier has stopped going round. It still heats up but doesn't spin. Any ideas on what it might be or how to fix it? Or is it a case of the repair costing more than the machine is worth? It's the replacement one I got during the recall due to the fire risk and typically is outside of the warranty by a couple of months.

sounds like the belt or the motor
best bet is to phone your local guy and ask him, he has almost certainly come up against this issue before and will be able to quote fairly accurately
then you can compare with the price of a new one

If you can hear the motor it will be the belt unless it is direct drive. Could be a simple fix such as a wire loose but there is no way of knowing without taking the rear/top cover plates off.

When it comes to tumble driers I have always said if I cannot find the fault myself then it is not worth repairing.

Its probably a snapped belt, they are usually the elastic type.(sounds like oyu have a Hotpoint/Indesit)
They are horrible to replace, but can be done. Question though, is it a tumble dryer (has a vented out hose) or is it a condenser dryer?

Thought it was.
It can be done, but you would need to check for fluff obstruction in and around the felts and bearings. Sadly those elastic belts many use now dont last or have the give needed to last.
It all depends on if you know a good local appliance man, the manufacturer will take almost as much as a new machine.

If you can diagnose the fault , use espares.co.uk for parts . Ive always had good service from them and in a lot of cases they have a video tutorial of how to change the part

Get a new one. They are not worth repairing. What are they now £180?

Normally I would but have just bought a new washing machine today so was hoping that someone might be able to suggest a cheap/free fix that would get it going again even if only for a few more months.

A condenser dryer.

Lots more work to do yourself on a condenser dryer, though sometimes it's not the belt, it can be a small fixed pulley that often breaks. It's only a few screws for the left side panel to come and take a look.

Hotpoint/Indesit/Whirlpool will charge you £120 and give you a years guarantee on the whole machine, otherwise it's just the cost of repair, which in this case won't be far off that.
An independent will charge around about £90 for a belt change on a condenser.

The cheap vented ones are, a decent condenser one is closer to £300, and (as above) a heat pump one can be double, but we know it's not one of those..

Have you no repair people who will come and look at it with no call out charge? Luckily we have so that is what I'd do.

Why would you call someone out who offers no call out charge? They aren't going to come out for nothing, and nor do I imagine do you go to work for nothing.

Lots of people come out for no call out charge.
They then give a price for the work & hope to get the job 👍🏻

Exactly this and they are the ones who are usually the busiest.

No, they're usually the dodgiest. For every job they walk away from without getting paid, the one's that do pay end up subsidising the rest, and therefore end up paying through the nose.
Quality tradesmen don't come free.

Don't expect them to do any actual work for free, but I have never paid or charged for a quote.
