I have a Sanyo TV and the remote wont turn the TV on. The remote is working, the .standby light on the TV goes out when I press the remote but instead of starting the light just comes on again. It was an intermittent problem and once I got the TV on the controls on the remote all work fine but now I just cannot get it on at all.

Does anyone know if it is liable to be repairable?

This is what I would do.

Get the model number of the telly and google it, experiment with search terms , tv model + no power, won't turn on, flashing red light, etc etc

Chances are you'll find some info on it. Modern TVs often have a special engineering mode that can let you know the fault code by flashing the led x number of times. If so do that and then google the fault code and so on.

If it's a newish TV and a pretty good , popular one you should find info on it. It might even be a common fault ( and hopefully well documented fix) if you are lucky.

I do this with just about everything I own that goes bad. Even if you don't do the repair yourself you have a reasonable idea what it is so you won't be as blind when talking to the repairer.

Post the model up on here and I will take a look later if you want.

Thanks for that, I have had a search around the net and cannot find any diagnostic info but have seen various posts of similar problems and it looks like my best bet is to contact a tv repairer. It also appears that I have had the TV over 5 years and maybe it is time to replace it.
It seems daft spending money on a repair when I can get a similar sized one for under £200.

Yeah agreed, unless you can do the repair yourself and spend next to nothing for spares (and the TV is worth a few bob) then chances are TV is beyond economical repair.

Maybe the TV is tuned into a different source, eg hdmi 2?

If the TV is picking up the signal from a satellite box, it needs to be on the correct source channel to show that feed. Try turning it on, make sure your source, eg satellite box, is also turned on and tuned to a channel, and then use the button on the remote to scroll through the different input options, hdmi 1, hdmi 2, AV1 etc.

Also check out all the cables attached the back of the TV, something may be loose.

If that fails, hit it on top with the palm of your hand, that used to work :D

Do you have Sky as well?

If so when the sky remote is in 'TV mode' does it manage to turn the TV standby on/off

It's a common fault with flat panel TVs, most likely a capacitor has reached the end of its life. If you stick your ear next to the tv when you try to turn it on can you hear a very faint clicking or pulsing noise? Like it's trying to kickstart itself but nothing happens?

It's an easy fix for anyone comfortable with electronics and a soldering iron but most people just buy a new TV.

^^^^^This. I did my toshiba, cost about 50p for the capacitor from maplins. If you are comfortable taking the back cover off the tv, (power off/unplug first!!!) the blown capacitor is easily identifiable as it will be bloated at the silver coloured top end.
These instruction cover everything if you fancy a go. http://www.instructables.com/id/Repair-your-electronics-by-replacing-blown-capacit/
