I've only been playing since August last year and have played the Soton Muni, New Forrest, Furzeley, Chilworth and Dibden but just wondered if anyone had any good recommendations for any others around these areas??

Thanks

Where are you based as there are a lot of good courses within a hour or so of portsmouth.
I know people have said avoid East Horton, I am a member there and think it is fine mate, but you have to make your own mind up.

In the area I like Botley, East Horton, Corhampton. As said there are loads to choose from mate.

To visit I would avoid East Horton but not bad for membership. I do enjoy hacking round there as its 5 mins from my work and I go with the work mates and take advantage of the £14 twilight deal on the short course. Its not "high quality" but for three guys having a laugh it fits the bill, its not a course for serious golf.

The other course there is not bad at all really, just hard to get on to from my experience.

So when are we going to have a round then midnight... I think you suggested one about a month ago when I came back on here :)

Mate,

I have got some leave coming up in the next few weeks, so I will bang you some dates through, what sort of times are good for you and what is the best days for you to play ? I hadn't forgotten

Meon Valley (Marriot hotel course) and Brokenhurst Manor are probably the nicest presented courses I've played in the area around Southampton. I've not played Stoneham but heard mixed reviews. Dibden has gone down hill in terms of quality since a few years back but I like using the driving range there. Romsey, Chilworth and West Wellow are all fairly basic courses but are worth a look later in the spring. South Winchester is a nice course with a decent mix of holes.

Stoneham is a nice course, but don't play when it is wet. There is also a very steep hill to finish.:( Greens are huge with big undulations, but last time I played there they were very slow. We get a freebie there, but still think it is one of the best courses in Hampshire (After ours of course !!) Friend of mine was a member there and Botley, and Stoneham is far better. My personal Hampshire favourites are Liphook, Blackmoor, Hayling Island, North Hants and Stoneham.

We have a freebie at Brokenhurst Simon. Assume you get the same at our place. Perhaps we could sort out a match club against club ?

I play Hockley (Just off the M3) and it's a great all year round course. Just joined and is a good test. Maybe a little too much of a test for me at the moment. :o

Thanks for all the suggestions, i,m based in Millbrook but play with guys from pompey and southampton.

I do wanna go to Lee on Solent cos it looks lovely and i have been advised against East Horton too but i allways like a challenge.

Hi Rich, yes we get a freebie at Blackmoor. As I've just joined I'm not sure of the process but for sure we can try to sort something out.

I used to be a member at Hockley - loved it and never muddy, personally preferred it to South Winchester. A bit out of the way but Alresford is nice but short.

Interestingly, I used to be a member at Hockley and I'm now a member at Broadstone. Hockley is a great all year round course as it's built on chalk so as stated warlier, it very seldom gets wet up there.
Broadstone is a classic heathland course. Every hole is completely different with the exception of the 3rd and 17th which are both downhill par 4's, one over a pond and the other over a ditch. It has everything, doglegs both ways, uphill holes, downhill holes, some long testing par 4's and each of the par 3's plays a different club. There is a lot of investment going into the course right now and it is shaping up to have excellent (and very quick) greens this year.

I think East Horton is getting some unfounded stick here guys.

Corhampton is my home club and no, East Horton isnt a match up. Having said that considering the amount of use it gets, the back ground of the land and age of the course being so young it still shapes up pretty well.

If you havent been playing long then is it really worth trying to hack around some of the toughter tests, when you can pay the £15 twilight fee and get som pretty decent golf?

I have played an awful lot of Hampshire Courses and we are lucky to have some of the nicest around. If there is enough interest Ill happily sort out a meet.
