Any other courses closed today????

Went up to my course (Hockley) to see it closed covered in snow. Was shocked as I live in Southampton where there was not much snow about, so ended up going to the range at Hedge End instead.

I posted this on our Facebook and twitter accounts earlier today......I think some folk really need to take a step back and realise that we do not close the course for the fun of it.

You are advised that due to the current conditions the course is currently closed.

In view of the course having been frozen and a surface thaw now taking hold, the situation has left the surface unstable over the frozen soil, even though the course may look playable, greens, approaches and fairways alike are presently unplayable. Traffic at this time will cause critical damage to the turf root sy
stems.

There will be a further course inspection tomorrow morning but there will be no prospect of play until approximately 08.30am. This will give the Greenkeeper sufficient time for a full inspection with the prospect of hopefully having 9 holes open for play. There will be a further inspection on Sunday morning with again the prospect of only a restricted course.

Please contact the Pro Shop on ########## for an update over the weekend.

I went out around 11am and it is very easy to see that play was not do-able today despite what our certain resident expert members say though....The frost has been in the ground for about ten days and is only just starting to slowly come out and if we put people out onto the course there would be one almighty mess.

Hell, even Goswick had 6 temps on today, the rain that fell yesterday has had nowhere to go due to the frozen ground yet some members think things are perfectly playable. I invited one member to join me on a course inspection to show him what state the ground is in but when his bluff was called his head went down and he shuffled off mumbling away to himself.....I wonder why he wouldn't join me?Moaning for moaning sake.

I was talking to the pro at the range I go to yesterday. He said that when it starts to thaw it is the worst time for the greens. The top thaws but underneath is frozen hard and he said that movement on it creates a shear effect and the roots get damaged. I'd rather not play til the course is both fit to play and not likely to suffer damage which would mean spring-time golf is compromised.

Much as I want to get on the course!

Wondering how far North or South or West I'd have to travel for a game?! Forecast is for above freezing all day Monday but cold again Tuesday. Not much of a thaw to be seen ahead :(

We ahd the back 9 and the short course open yesterday but everything shut earlier in the week
All shut today and tomorrow, maybe opening sometime on Sunday if a thaw sets in.
Next week's looking marginally warmer so hopefully everything open by Monday.

Our back nine open today(Ashton in Makerfield), so at least got a knock. Not too sure about comp tomorrow though..
Still on temps though, recently treated myself to new putter and not putted on a proper green since!
