Guys, have a netgear stora as a NAS and its wired into my home network. I know its IP address but its saying its unreachable. however, when i access it via the TV as a DLNA server, it works and plays films no problem?! I just cant access it from a computer to add or download from it?!

Any ideas???!!!

Need to check you don't have any conflicting IP addresses and that the sub net masks are matching

Does sound a little odd as you can see the device from other devices. May be worth trying to ping it.

hope i'm not telling you how to suck eggs but this is where I would start

Going back to basics, can your computer connect to the internet or anything else in your house? If not then your computer has dropped off the network.

Unless the IP was set statically or reserved in the dhcp server it's possible that the IP lease has expired and changed.

Can you ping the IP? Start > Cmd > ping 192.168.x.x (eg)
If there's no response it means the IP is likely to have changed.
Do you know the hostname of the device? If so try ping that it will give you an IP.

The DLNA service is broadcast on the network so devices will pick it up regardless of the IP or name

The solution is quote often the simplest one....

Router to switch cable had been unplugged by one of the kids. so TV, Xbox, SKY and NAS were all "networked" via the 8 port switch, however they were not going any further than the switch (ie the internet). so thats why the TV would play files from the NAS, but i couldnt access via the wifi network.

Simple. damn kids.... thanks for help guys!

dont forget the layer 1 checks!

thats already over my head. is layer 1 the physical layer? to scare you, i am cisco and HP networking sales certified! just shows you that sales guys know nothing!!

I will not let you near a computing device..... lil knowledge is dangerous

OSI 7 layer model

Layer 1 - Physical
Layer 2 - Data link, think MAC addressing etc
Layer 3 - Network, IP addressing etc

I'm technical, so am fully aware that sales no nothing, get all the free jollies and a bigger pay packet. Bitter? Me?

Ha, just joking. It's all about the golf really!

I got trained up when my first redundancy was due, passed my exams okay but one of the tutors told this IT joke. I understood the joke I just did not find it funny, left me in some doubts as to whether I made the right decision. I also hate acronyms they get me completely confused ... I am now a house husband who sorts out all the stuff for my wife's business and looks after our 11 month old boy ( who will either play for England/ pro golfer/ hairdresser/ or just stand 3"s away from a tv )

sure thing! just remember to make wild promises that we can't actually deliver, we don't want to risk accurately setting their expectations :)
