When I was playing Royal North Devon a few weeks ago, the bloke I was playing with got onto being able to play any other 'royal' course for free as a member of RND. No reason to doubt that, but thought I'd read up on it, but can't really see any information on its sounds a very very good deal if so!!!!!
Anyone a member of one and taken advantage of this, if so where?

There are a couple of members of Royal Ascot. But they don't post much!

The Royal 'club' - actually pretty much worldwide - is simply an example of 'tags' that can trigger associations. There are James Braid and Harry Colt 'related' associated clubs too.

There's a 9 hole course near us called 'Royal' Sawdon by the locals but I doubt it gives rights on other 'Royal' courses.

I'm at Royal Winchester, I can get recipricals with Royal Ascot, Royal North Devon.

A few in Australia, Tenerife, Zimbawbe and others I can't remember off the top of my head :P

Pretty sure from memory we have RND, Royal Winchester for certain but I was under the impression our reciprical covered all the royal clubs. I'll have to check it out when I'm there tomorrow and find out

Where does the Royal prefix come from?
For some daft reason i thought the Royal courses were ones that had hosted The Open, but that's a mere coincidence for a few of them

It's bestowed upon the club by a member of the Royal Household (not necessarily The Queen).

Don't know about what reciprical arrangements they have with one another, but have heard that the R&A members get lots of free or massively discounted prices, not just at "Royal's" but at clubs around the world.

If a member of the eponymous family of congenitally privileged toffs decides to be patron of a club then they can confer the title. Most happened a century ago or more, but a few, e.g. Troon, were more recent.

I think it extends further than that, I heard homer and hawkeye are godparents to Prince George and 87th and 88th in line for the throne respectively !!!

Are you sure that's not their nett scores? ;)

Our club is part of the 1892 club. All the golf clubs founded in 1892. (Probably not all)
Reciprical golf apparently.

I am a member of the Royal Automobile Club.

Not wishing to boast, but it includes home assistance and 30 days European cover a year.

The RAC course at Epsom is quite good too.

I used to play quite a bit on Royal Isle of Wight GC [Bembridge]
Mainly rounders, cricket or building sandcastles with my kids.

HRH plays a lot at Silvermere & has been coached by the boss there for over 20 years. Will they get a "Royal" at some stage?

A friend of mine used to be Sec at Cromer and got a call from 'Prince Andrew' wanting a game.
He spent a good minute trying to work out which of his 'friends' was on a windup.
Suddenly he realised it was genuine and had to back track a fair bit!!

He ended up playing him in a two ball and had a good game.
