Just wondering if anyone goes fishing as I'm after some advice. I only ever went a few times as a kid but one of my pals has asked if I fancy it next weekend and have said yes.

I need to know what basic gear other than a rod that I'll need for float fishing on a lake. Should I ditch the float idea and buy some pre made carp rigs and would these work even though I have no idea on lake depth etc

I have a cheapo Fladen 12 ft rod and reel loaded with line but that's it

Any help appreciated...

A hook and bait might help...

Landing net, keep net... depends what fish you are after. A seat, definitely a seat, a brolley, rod rest. Fishing licence!!

You will definitely need a rod licence. Doesn't matter if the lake is private or not....it could be a pond in your own back garden but you would still need a licence to fish it!
A lot depends on what type of fish are in the lake. If you are only going for Tench, Bream, Perch etc. then the rod you have would be fine. If there are decent sized carp in there you would be advised to get some "beefier" gear if you intend going for those.
Are you just fishing during the day, or are you planning to go "overnight?"
Also you say you currently have a rod and reel "loaded with line" but also state that you don't go very often. How long has the line been on the reel???? If it is a fair number of years I would advise you to change it. Most fisherman change their line every season, some really avid carpers change it every six months!! You'd hate to hook into the fish of a lifetime and find that your 5 year old line snaps like cotton!!

Easiest thing to do is ask your mate what type of fish you will be after and does he have any tackle you can borrow.

For a general mixed fish lake,(bream, roach, small carp,) a standard float rod, 5lb line, waggler float, hooks size 10-16 , couple of tins of sweet corn , maggots and maybe some worms,
Landing net, disgorger, split shot ,

For a large carp water, then a beefier rod, heavier line, bigger landing net, carp rigs , ledger weights, boilies

You'll probably will be in adjacent swims so the landing net can be shared

Don't forget your camera or phone to catch the moment :)

Boilies not necessary. There is not a carp in the land that couldn't resist a nice big lump of breadflake, sweetcorn, or luncheon meat. Boilies are ok if they are used regularly on the water but you would need to know which type of boilies are thrown in there a lot. No good fishing crab boilies on a water that sees Cell or other "sweet" boilies used most of the time. Plus, if you go with boilies you are then into hair rigging. Meat, bread or Corn can be fished on a "normal" hook. Don't get too complicated

Thanks for the info fellas. I'm told it small carp, bream and roach as phil said.

I'll look into getting a rod license as its something I'll probably do more often in the future. Especially as golf is quite expensive and am having another child this November so am not renewing my membership and will just pay per play.

Can a carp rod be used for general float or river fishing? I'd be happy to upgrade my gear before the bairn is born if it will cover all areas

The same way a golf ball doesn't know if its b reing putted with a bladed wedge or a putter and fish doesnt know what rod has caught it. Just some are more suited for different places.

Just be warned. Good fishing conditions are often good golfing conditions ;)

You need a pellet waggler float rod rated to 8lb line approx. which will work on smaller fish and carp to double figures

Carp rod which are normally parked in a Pod with bite alarms is not suitable for float fishing for smaller carp, it would be like taking your driver out to putt on the green!
