Any Clubs running 9-Hole Competitions successfully?

What problem do you see with them? We have some at our club and they are quite popular. There is an after-work comp which is run every other Friday during the summer months and we have 9-hole comps after the monthly medal rounds, mostly for the beginners and higher handicappers and for whoever wants to go to church, spend time with the family, have brunch or whatever people do on Sunday mornings, first. They tee off after the last group of the 18-hole medal and are done before the first 18-hole groups return. It works quite well.

We hold 9 hole Supper comps every Wed from Apr - Sep and are very well attended. Each Wed of the month is a different format comp and one Wed a month we have a 9 hole qualifier (paperwork required from CONGU and info available on their web site).

We've had 5 or 6 but very little take-up

They run at a club I am member with 1 per month midweek stableford and a couple at weekends over the year.

The problem for the serious golfers off mid to low handicaps is that they play off the yellow tees and they have a chart which decides how many they reduce your handicap by - in my case that is the loss of 2 shots (can be 3 or more) as the SSS set for this "easier 9"

This means that to buffer I have to play under handicap which is crazy and the competitor level with handicaps below 16 is minimal (or those that do not realise).

Net result is that the 9 hole comps have a fair attendance level but it is seniors maintaining their handicaps (understandable) and the absolute bandits doing their usual bit for 3 qualifiers or other associated reasons .....

Nope. Played off different tees and different formats (chase the flag, off the reds, 6 clubs and a putter etc) Winner gets the pot and buys a round for everyone playing and gets a cut off their supper club handicap

We have qualifying comp every Thursday, white tee medal one week ,yellow tee stableford the next.
We can enter a 9 hole stableford off the yellows on both of these days.
We only have to enter our gross score on the card and the computer adjusts the points.
We are with Intelligent golf and I presume it is one off their apps.
Handy for ageing golfers such as myself to keep an active handicap.

Thanks for the detail, makes sense now, all non-qualifiers for Club handicap.

We've run them on our Alternative Medal day, which is usually the Friday immediately before the monthly medal. The 9 hole comp runs after the main alt medal tee times. 9 Hole comps are usually played by our older members, but, as a qualifier it is a way of keeping their handicap alive, so it gets a reasonable turnout :)

We have them on Thursday evening in the summer food is put on but is optional, seems popular on the whole. Bit of golf and a bite to eat.

We have a Tuesday night roll up (9 holes) from April to end of August. It's a non qualifier. £2 in and £5 for grub afterwards. Always well attended and a good craic

Our club runs a Tuesday evening comp over 11 holes (front 9 + 2 walk in holes) and supper afterwards, well attended but not by me as I am always at work!

We run one on alternate Mondays (the other Monday being the seniors comp on the 18) on our 9 hole measured course with a specific card for the 9 hole competition.

We started them at the request of the Seniors who play on there and wanted to maintain a competition status, plus a chance for those without competition status to win prizes.

The first couple were really well supported (15 plus entrants) but it has now tailed off with just 2 last Monday. We only intend to run them in the summer months.
