Any club champions?

nope, didnt even get to the knockout.

Swings been all over the shop..........until this weekend as I've been told what my main problem has been the last 3 years- cant wait to play like a 2 handicapper again

Nope, managed 3rd best gross score however and was very pleased with that along with 0.3 handicap cut and 2nd in the net comp'.
Not that expected to win, as the eventual champion's handicap is 7 shots better than mine, so 14 shots over 2 rounds.

Our club champs are a scratch 36 hole one day's. Won be a 1 handicapper.
One of the reasons (and many more) I've leaving my current club.

Got knocked out of the matchplay comp in the 1/4's.

I don't like 1 handicappers either, but it's not really a reason for me to leave my club, most places have them!

Our club champs are played off scratch only. There is no nett comp. This years club championship was made up of 12 members…. we are a 700 member club….

our club champs are also scratch only. we had a field of 118.

members with handicaps of 11 or below were eligible for the 'A' section.

the 'B' section competition had a field of 107 members -hcp 12-28, also played off scratch. not sure what the point in the 'B' is personally.

if i was you, playing off 6 i'd fancy my chances in the club champs with only a dozen golfers ahead of me.

I’m having trouble here, a club champion should be the best golfer in the club, year on year, off scratch IMO.

I don’t know any club in East Lothian, that’s a lot of top quality golf clubs, where the format is anything other than scratch. Whether it’s qualifying rounds then mach play, like most up here, or stroke play.

Many of my best mates are scratch or cat one players, I play with them regularly. Most of my other best mates are cat 2 and 3 and I also play with them regularly.

I have no issues with the Cat1 guys or any other Cat players.

Club championships should include the whole club not just the lowest few. If a high handicapper can put together 2 great rounds to beat a cat1 player then good for them.
If you want to judge yourself against the rest of the club, play in the year long order of merit.

For me Club Champion is the "Major " of the year and like the Majors it's the best golfer on the day and has to be off scratch.

Having said that in NZ they also ran Stroke and matchplay "Club Champions" Scratch and divisions.

To qualify it was best 2 of 3 rounds played over 3 consecutive weekends played in divisions and all "off the stick" as they called it. Then top 16 into matchplay again on consecutive weekends till finalists found then Finals day over 36 holes. Used to create lots of interest round the club.

Not at all. Open to all members.

But Shirley, the best golfer has to be club champion, you can't be the best golfer shooting 90 just because you are getting a load of shots.

Scratch for the Club champ every time. Yes we have a handicap section, but yo don't get your name up there in these parts unless its the scratch

Runner up in ours. Played great tee to green but a horrendous putting performance. 36 holes in 1 very stormy day (not just because the ladies section are all together!) - started at 8.30am and finished finally at 7.45pm.

Then what is the point of having handicaps?…. is the club championship for the clubs elite only?

The club championship is for everyone but likelihood is it will only ever be won by a low handicapper as it should be a gross competition (whether stroke play, matchplay or a combination).

The solution is to have divisions split by h/c category. That way, higher h/clappers can win a division but they can't call themselves a club champion.

Caveat to this, and this is how it works at our place, is that if you play off say 12 but shoot a good enough gross total in the 36 hole qualifier, you can enter the championship matchplay. You're unlikely to win but you're not barred from entry.
