Antivirus question.

Do I really need a separate antivirus program, won't Windows defender be enough protection ??

It’s not a necessity but it’s a strong recommendation.

Windows defender is a pile of crap. Designed to be an all in one it’s not actually very good at any of it.

It’s about risk aperture at the end of the day. But I wouldn’t trust it for anything other than basic firewall defences.

I hadn't had windows for 10 years got a new laptop before Xmas which is windows so asked My mate who works in counter hacking and it security

He said the built in stuff is fine now days anything else will just slow your pc

Billy boy
You should only have one anti virus program on your pc as they fight

AVG free is good enough, you only need to pay for one if you want to get rid of the annoying ads asking you to “upgrade” to the professional ( paid for) version

CC cleaner (free) does the same thing now so much now that Ive uninstalled it today

Cheers guys I'll turn off defender, I uninstalled Avast, AVG wouldn't let me uninstall so it's still running.
Just noticed Malwarebytes was already on the PC when I got it 2nd hand

You can't uninstall an antivirus if it's running in the background.

FWIW, I use Eset Nod32. For something as serious as anti virus protection the small fee for the license is worth every penny. It's also very light on my system.

I've used AVG for many years and it seems very good. I now also use Duckduckgo as a browser and it's stoped all the rubbish that goes with Google etc, it now has a facility to use one of their email addresses when registering for websites and they remove any trackers before forwarding the message to your normal email address.
