Anti malware and virus recommendations

Free is good, but I've always used Norton, I know people will argue it's rubbish, it's process heavy, but I've never had any bother with it and it's kept my PC, wor lass and the bairns laptops safe.

The main reason I use it, is that when looking for an AV/Internet application, I tried the free stuff and tried the paid stuff and Norton was the only one which found a virus on my PC, so I've stuck with them since.

I use Kaspersky as I get a free subscription for up to 3 devices as part of my current account package (Barclays). Spam filter is good and it certainly flags/quarantines stuff when it should. Had it for several years now with no issues.

After years of using AVG I've binned it in favour of 360 Total Security.
No issues to date and easy to use.

Slime.

The free stuff is just as good as any paid for....so go with free

Well it is all a matter of opinion, but I think yours is slightly misleading. Usually a paid for program will be more efficient at picking up new threats as they are supported and updated quicker. You also will get support with a paid for AV, which to some people is important. You don't get annoying ads on paid for programs either. They tend to be easier to install and run and there are fewer conflicts with other programs.

The primary differences between free and paid anti-virus software, however, involve the additional features you get when you pay for a one-year license. There are the
parental controls, and more elaborate firewalls to prevent intrusions, and performance and conflict scans for Windows PCs. The paid programs also look for suspicious behaviour, such as a program attempting to access files it shouldn't, that almost certainly won't be in a free offering.

It's all a matter of opinions. If all you do is use your PC to check email, do your internet banking, shopping and watch a few streamed movies at home then a free AV with something like Malwarebytes / CCleaner etc is probably more than sufficient. If you rely on your PC for work purposes or have more indepth usage on the web, likely to visit a certain type of website, want extra controls, add ons then the cost of a paid AV is worth it.

Another fan of Avast Free!

Though considering (not yet convinced) upgrading to their extra-feature Paid-For version for £20/yr.

Never had a Virus problem yet, but plenty of 'Threat Detected' messages!

Much better than Norton that I used to use!
