Happy nu year forum muckers! I am planning a wee trip to fife, and I am intrigued by this track. Is it any good? Does it really have the toughest par 3 in the UK? Would it be a good choice for a newbie like me? (I have been playing for about 10 months) All advice appreciated!
;)

Deke,

Although just along the coast in Aberdour I have to confess to never having played Anstruther (although as has been said the website and advertising about the toughest Par 3 certainly catch your attention).

Are you coming through especially to play Anstruther or are you on a trip to Fife as I would be more than happy to provide you with a summary of the nearby courses.

Anstruther certainly is famous for having the Best Fish and Chip Shop in UK and if you have the patience and time to brave the queue you will not be disappointed.

Cheers algar5,will be moving to somewhere in the east neuk later this year.I have been to Anstruther a few times and been tempted by it's interesting 9 hole, but would appreciate any advice regarding nearby courses! Hope to be working in Dundee, and aspire to join Scotscraig, but news of any fife tracks is allways good, cheers.
:D

Being a bit biased here but Scotscraig is the best out of the lot, personally i wouldn't join a 9 hole course when there's a lot to choose from if your after a game mate Pm and we'll sort out something.

Deke,

The East Neuk, You truly are in golfing heaven. You are within 20 minutes of some of the finest courses anywhere -

1. All of the St. Andrews courses incl. Dukes, Kingsbarns and The Castle.

2. Crail has 2 cracking courses (www.crailgolfingsociety.co.uk) which are always in great nick and the greens are some of the best anywhere.

3. Lundin Links (www.lundingolfclub.co.uk)is an Open Qualifying Course and is a lovely course in it's own right and it's next door neighbour

4. Leven Links (www.leven-links.com) is another fine example of links golf.

These are just a few within 20 mins but there are numerous others incl. Elie, Charelton and Scoonie.

Scotscraig is a great course and although I haven't had the pleasure of playing there recently I certainly do recall it with fond memories. stevek1969 is a member there and am sure would only be too happy to help you out somemore.

Finally if your wanting a game at Aberdour just pm me and we'll get something sorted out.

Many thanks lads ! I will PM both of you over the next few months as I go to Dundee often and will be spending some time in fife viewing houses before my move. Thanks again I am really looking forward to moving!
;)

I agree, Fife is a mecca for golf. If I were to choose just one course to join (Although there are two courses) it would be Crail. Nice new clubhouse and hardly ever closed.

Bad experience there. Father in law and I rolled up one Saturday early when on holiday nearby. Small notice said Saturday was competition day. There were maybe 2 cars in car park and course looked really quiet. Clubhouse was shut so we asked an old boy who was hanging about if was ok to play. He said put your money in the box and off you go.
Did that but just going on to 1st tee 2 other gentlemen appeared and quite curtly asked what we were doing. Said we'd paid and were told it was ok to play.
We were told in no uncertain terms that it wasn't despite there being hardly anyone on the course. Didn't argue, had to leave and then come back later when clubhouse was open and ask for our money back from the fees box.
Overall very poor impression of the club. Wouldn't rush back. Maybe just unlucky. Holes 1 and 9 looked pretty dull to be honest.

I would say it would have to be Crail for me. Played all the courses round the East Neuk. Used to play Anstruther a lot in the Fife 9 hole Club league and it was one of the better 9 hole courses in Fife. However if I stayed down that way it would be well down my list when compared to other courses in the area.

There's a periscope at Royal Cromer up my way. Big old thing about 20ft high , wasnt working when I played it last year though. Mind you it was blowing a gale and raining sideways so couldnt see much anyway !

Hi Deke,
I played Anstruther a couple of years ago while i was up for a week holidaying in Fife. I initially went to play at Crail but because i was on my own they wouldnt let me go on, the pro said it was more than his job was worth to let a loan player go out (even though when i got there a few days earlier i went down and asked what would be a good day to come for a game and a different pro had told me when the best day was to come back). Anyway, i thought i would try Anstruther and i thought it was brilliant. Really friendy club, bloke in the club house was really helpful (When i told him what had happened at Crail he said they are up there own arses). As i went to tee off a guy came over and asked could he go around with me and i had a great time. The par 3 (i think it was 7th) was a real toughie. The fella i had teamed up with insisted because it was my first time playing the course that i had to go for it (sod!!) The wind was blowing right across and i had to quite literally hit it out toward the sea and allow the wind to blow it back in. Unfortunatley it hit some rocks and bounced about a mile in the air never to be seen again. The guy i was playing with hit a 7 iron onto a little patch of fairway then another 7 iron onto the green and 1 putted.
If memory serves me correct i think Seve practiced there in preperation for the open or just went for a game one time. Also while i think on, there is a hotel at the top of the road you go down to the Club (i think it was called the Craws nest) does cracking food.

Played Anster a while back with my Father but remember thinking it was okay.

With referance to Crail I have only played the Craighead and personally I wouldn't thank you for a game on it again, unless the Balcomie is something totally different I fail to see why folk seem to get all misty eyed when talking about Crail Golf Society...

I really need to get my backside over to Fife for a few more rounds of golf.

There seems to be so many wonderful little course dotted here and there that I should play some of them.
