Ok so this may have been answered many times before, but bear with me.

Watching one of the latest Mark Crossfield videos on the different spin rates between a Pro V1x and an NXT Tour S, it got me thinking as to whether a similar test has been done among a number of the balls on the market. Turns out it has, in golfdigest.

Down in the bottom right you've got, as you'd imagine, the £40 /dozen Pro V1 and Pro V1x. Down there are the balls with high spin on wedge shots, low spin with the driver. In that same cluster though, you've got the Callaway Hex Chrome and Hex Chrome+, which are £10 cheaper /dozen.

Putting to one side the question of whether I'd be good enough to be able to take advantage of any differences among the balls, what benefit would one get from the extra £10 spent on a box of Pro V1s when the Callaway balls have the spin characteristics (at least on these two shots)?

Depends on how well you hit the ball, I prefer a Zstar over a pro v1 but imagine I'm in the minority

Minority maybe but not alone. I would choose Z-star, Hex black Tour or B330-S over the ProV1. I would even go as far as saying I don't like the ProV1 and I definitely wouldn't pay a premium for them.

The chart you have is one of the reasons i started to use the Hex Chrome. I bought a sleeve of 3 locally to try them and got good distance, spin and they felt great off the putter so ive played them all over the summer. Theyre even cheaper if you have a scout about as i paid £19.00 for a dozen new off ebay.

That's kind of why I asked the question. If a Hex Chrome behaves like a Pro V1 on pitch shots and drives, then what would you get for the extra tenner? Thinking I should get a sleeve of 3 as well and see how they feel.

I like the Pro V but think it is an over rated ball and prefer the Z Star or Bridgestone. Not a fan of Callaway balls as I find them too click off the putter. That said I've been using the NXT Tour S recently to try and get a few yards off the tee in winter and to be honest with the wet greens I'm still capable of getting it to stop so in my humble opinion a premium ball, especially in winter isn't a necessity

Ive only used the Hex Chrome, havent tried the Hex Chrome plus or i think its the Black Hex Chrome tour balls. It is a soft feel ball though as thats my preference.
