I'm getting a £100 prepaid Mastercard from BT because I signed up in a certain timeframe. More fool me! So was thinking I'd treat myself to a golf gadget. I have Game Golf classic and love using it. What I struggle with out on the course though is club selection because I can't estimate yardages. So I was thinking of getting some sort of GPS device, probably a watch. Budget is £100 or thereabouts and I'd love some recommendations please.

Garmin S2 is as simple and effective as you can find for sub £100.

Back, middle and front distances, with layups at the push of a button.

I have the Garmin S2 and love it. I think it should be roughly in that price range or even below. The only disadvantage is that it only gives you the distance to front/middle/end of the green. So it is no help if you want to know how far it is to the edge of a bunker, water hazard, dog leg or the like. The more advanced watches (and handheld gps devices) also give you a little image of the layout of the hole and allow you to specify your target.

I find the layup points pretty useless. If I know it is 257 yards the middle of the green, and I want a 100 yard layup, I can do the math myself. Never found a hole where the dogleg point was usefull either. For me hazards would be much more relevant.

Decided to ignore the lot of you! lol

Went for the Garmin S20. Arriving tomorrow all being well!

Oh cool, you have to share your experience with us when you try it out, please. I am especially interested in the shot tracking and analysis features it has (even though, since you already use GameGolf, that might be of less interest for you, but I hope you will try it out anyway.

I have the Garmin S20 and I love it. I always take it with a pinch of salt as when I stand by the course 150 marker or when PPs check their GPs systems/bushnalls, there is always a few yards difference either way. So as a guide its really good.

I don't think its very good on the IPhone though. But when used on a laptop the overall view of your play per game and throughout the season is great for seeing where weaknesses/strengths are - GIR, FIR, Putts per round etc.

On the course, it can be a little hit and miss in terms of registering a shot and you suddenly find you have hit a 500 yard drive!

have fun with it and hope it helps.

Thanks Jutta. Yes I am a GameGolf convert so will use that but more than happy to compare the shot tracking stuff. Just need to get on the course to try it. Booked in at Honiton at the end of September, but bothing before then.

So first proper outing for the Garmin today. I have to say, the shot tracking is rubbish. Completely unreliable. That said, the GPS is brilliant indeed. Made a huge difference to my game knowing how far away I was from the pin. Club selection was so much easier. I hit my first sub 100 round as well. Very happy indeed.

The scorecard functionality is great too, so much easier than pencil and card, particularly as I sweat a lot on days like today and the scorecard gets damp. Obviously in a comp you have to fill in the card, but for the purposes of social golf this is great.

Good to know about the shot tracking. I played with someone who used a TomTom watch the other day, which also has a shot tracker, and he was very happy with that. So if I really consider getting a new watch mostly for the shot tracking function, probably something I will consider.

Congrats to breaking 100. Well done.
