Played my Volvo Singles Matchplay at the end of last week against a fellow South Staffs GC member.
A really nice guy who I have played with before and a capable player off 13 so I knew it wouldn't be easy.

After we both hooked our drives on the par 5 1st into the trees we both knew it could be an interesting day. I chipped out and then sent my my next shot just left of the green. He chipped out and then shanked his next shot... At this point I'm thinking I could be 1 up shortly but after not being able to find my ball (how we didn't find it I have no idea) I had to go back and play another.
In the end we halved the hole with 7's. Superb standard early on! :o
I went 2 up after 4 then he managed to peg it back and it was tight all the way out where we finished all square after 9. It remained tight until 16 where at 1 down and approaching a long par 5 and him not being a big hitter, I fancied creeping level despite him receiving a shot.
I played the hole well, on in 3 comfortably and a tap in for a par but my opponent managed to play 3 excellent long shots to be on in 3 and had a tap in par also which made a nett birdie and me now 2 down and 2 to play.
I managed to par 17 for the hole, now walking to 18 1 down.
340y up hill, I took on the narrow fairway with the trusty 3 wood I hit the best drive of the day for me, leaving a wedge to the green.
My opponent pulled his tee shot short and into the trees. All I was thinking about at this point was back down the 1st...!!!
He then proceeded to pull our his hybrid from 170y uphill out of the tree lined rough and put it to 15ft. My heart sank...
I put my wedge to 10ft and couldn't sink the putt, after he put his putt to a foot and it was game over.... :(

In fairness to my opponent he played his long game awesome all day apart from hole 1 where as my normal trusty short game that gets me out of trouble was left at home. I didnt really play too well and was beaten by a great competitor, cracking guy and a very deserved winner.

My apologies to team GM for not progressing and I shall make sure I receive 10 lashes for the punishment :)

Unlucky fella at least you are gracious in defeat. Better luck next year.

Best make it twenty lashes just to be sure ;)

Twenty lashes! Pah you've gone soft Chris. Fifty lashes and then a long soak in a bath of salted lemon juice ;)

Seriously unlucky fella but well played to make it this far. Sounds like a titanic tussle :)

Sounds like it was a cracking game. Unlucky buddy. When someone hits a hybrid from 170 out of the trees onto the dance floor on the last I guess you know its not going to be your night!

Unlucky Steve, sounds like a good match.

Broke a golden rule (of mine) in matchplay though of counting chickens.
Not that it might have made any difference, but it saves the huge swings of emotion if you don't do it. :)

I must admit I did start counting and when he put the hybrid onto the green I just sank for a few seconds.
I then did say to myself that if I can wedge close to the pin I can have a birdie chance and hopefully draw level (providing he missed his putt) but it wasn't to be. :(
