I had two firsts today. I shot one shot under my handicap, and scored only 12 shots over par on the back nine. I also scored my first ever birdie, and strangely enough it was on the hole I really hate (a par 5). I scored 34 points Stableford. I had a lesson last week because I was still topping the ball. It was a simple thing, I was taking my eye off of the ball before whacking it. Since the lesson I have only topped the ball a handful of times. During the lesson my pro was explaining to me the importance of weight distribution, so today I concentrated on putting a little more weight on the front of my feet, and a fraction more on my left foot than my right. The difference it made was incredible, and I was even bringing up divots after I hit the ball. I found that doing this helped me keep balance after the shot, and I was finishing with the correct posture. Of course, golf is the worst mistress of all, and I am sure the next time I go out, I will be crap.

Good luck with it....i'm currently on my 5,627th Eureka moment!

Good question, I was thinking the same thing?

Shooting below your handicap should mean a score of more than 36 points

Not necessarily.... A seriously tough course where SSS is 3 over Par could would effectively achieve 1 under h'cap with 34 points! But it would seem the OP has mad some arithmetic/conversion errors (still?).

Well done to him btw! Shows how important balance is!

Yup I had mine the other week, and found that when I cocked my wrists "to stiff" even though I was eventually releasing "wrists " it was to late and the ball was flying further right than before. More club head speed? Who knows. What I am slowly learning is when I have hit a bad shot to try and analyse straight away what the flippin heck happened there ? to try not to do it again ? to not over correct ? And try not to get the shot back and landing myself in further trouble.

good luck with it me man.

I used to catch the ball "clean" or thin it from time to time. My coach told me to always keep my head down and look for the divot hole or snapped tee when i play a shot, then look for the ball after. Worked perfectly.

STOP PRESS PLONKER ALERT

Added up the card again. I was 1 shot over handicap and my points were 35. Never, I still have my first target to hit, however I definately got my first Birdie.

Are we still on for the birdie.

I've got my fireworks primed and ready to launch, and I'll look a prat with the neighbours when I have to announce it as a false alarm.
