We are putting a extension of the house. This will be on the first floor. In the future, we will build underneath it when we put the side extension, but at the moment, keeping it simple. This would however mean that we will have to build the extension on stilts.

How easy/difficult is it to do that? What are the cost implication. The other complication we have is that our back garden falls away from the house. However, where the proposed stilts go in, it is relatively before it starts going off.

My builder mentioned something about a Stilts framework, but I cant find anything online about it.

I think you need advice from a Structural Engineer, not a builder. What you propose is straightforward enough, your "stilts" are just support columns but you need to know what the ground conditions are like so that the foundations for the columns can be designed properly.

As Tarkus wrote, it'll depend a lot on what the ground conditions are like, if you hit soft stuff you may have to go very deep for them to be stable, get some advice from those that know. Also if your house was built on or around mining works stilts may not be an option at all.
