Can any body tell me how the annual review works and in what circumstances shots would be added or taken away from a handicap.
I've played 11 qualifying rounds this year and dropped 3 shots from my handicap and the scoring average across those 11 rounds would leave me in the buffer zone of my present handicap.
Just wondering if I should expect any reduction.
All the comps are finished at my club now, except midweek monthly medals, so thats probably me done for this year

The annual review is for the committee to look at any player to ensure handicaps are representative of ability. The starting point is a handicap system report that can be run from 1st December. Nothing is automatic, it is merely a tool to flag players who may need looking at. Players not on the report can also be considered and it is after all evidence is considered that any adjustments are made.

Particular types that often figure are:
- Players rapidly improving with a lot of good scores
- Players gradually declining with few even decent scores
- New allocations during the season to ensure they are OK

From what you say the report may flag you but the decision to cut rests with the committee.

I helped in the Annual review at my Club a year or two back and we looked at the printed playing results of anyone who was "flagged" I dont know your handicap but from what you said I doubt that you would be altered as you arn't doing anything score wise that is wildly either side of of the buffer from what you say

Thanks for your reply.

I've come down to 12 from 15 this season but I feel that theres a couple of shots in me yet.
I've been playing for nearly 4 years and have not really been aware of the annual review until recently.
I'll have to wait and see

I very much doubt you'd be pulled anything with 11 cards in. The average score is irrelevant really.

Generally, they don't like to fiddle with handicaps in such an arbitrary manner if they can avoid it as it creates arguments. With 11 cards in and a 3 shot cut, the handicapping system is working on you. So, unless a bunch of your cards were level par gross rounds, they won't adjust you.

The Annual Review normally picks up on people who regularly play exactly to their handicap or within a shot or so. The average scores for a 15 handicapper should be about 20 over nett differential. If better than that and several cards have been submitted then it is flagged for consideration for reduction. Likewise if regularly shooting 20 above handicap it will flag for an increase. Players that have been decreased by the system usually do not get picked up on the review.
