So slight (through gritted teeth) brag post- got an email saying I'd been cut to 16.5 from 18.5.... which I "suppose" I should be happy with but 87 being my best medal round seems a little harsh/generous.

I didn't even realise this happened in scotland I had only ever heard of ESR and them being in England.

So guessing I've smashed my previous season target if in a little underwhelming way.

Congrats on the cut. If 87 is your best and your course is par 70 16.5 = 17 so that's playing to hcap. If it's a par 72 you are still 2 above hcap. Well done me man.

Tashyboy,

Scores are assessed against SSS/CSS, not par.

Turkish,

What is your course SSS?

Stu , will you be selling your Sombrero in the for sale section or Ebay :D

Rosecott does a 16.5 sound about right for his hcap adjustment if it is 70 . Any idea when they start to do them in England

Not rosie but...no, on the facts as presented it sounds fundamentally at odds with a basic principle (that handicaps aren't reduced below a level that a player has played to).

However, whilst errors sometimes happen I would also question the 'facts'! Basically I would want to see the handicap record myself to assess scoring and course ratings...

CONGU recommends that the Annual Review should be conducted over the winter period from 1October at a time convenient to the Handicap Committee or as directed from time to time by the
Union. This applies in all national Unions.
ESRs are applicable in England, Ireland and Wales but not in Scotland.

are you sure it was under annual review and not just the handicap committee thinking you are a bit of a bandit?;)

if it is you are the first person Ive heard of getting one in Scotland, maybe because its a cut they have done it.

I know of 3 guys who had horrendous years with one's handicap going from 6 to 10 with a cont line of 0.1's. the other two at least 20 plus straight 0.1 and again no increase.

Well this was my thoughts too but I suppose even if they put me 17.0 I would still be 17 so will grudgingly accept!!! Also it becomes a little more complicated than course ratings as it says Handicap Review 2016: The annual players review has been completed by the Handicap Committee. Your performance against target during 2016, and / or match play results, is sufficient to warrant a reduction of 2 shots, as per CONGU guidelines"

So because I won a few matchplay ties and got to a final of a doubles matchplay tournament this could have been taken into consideration- CSS couldn't be considered on the days these were played as they are unknown to committee. Maybe I did ruffle a few feather because I got 4 envelopes at prize giving :D :whoo:

PS hope it didn't come across as a moan as pretty happy to beat my target for the year kinda just wish it had been because of competition rather than review. Also a bit worried I may not be able to play to as easily but guess that's where I need to use it further my improvement!

My friend also got cut from 10.8 to 9.8 after review so must be done throughout the club.

I understand the complications, and the nuances. I would even go as far as to point out that 'and/or' matchplay results would be outside their guidelines, it should be 'and'.

Just to clarify, you didn't score better than a +17 differential in winning any of those 4 events, or any other Q score this season?

At my last club, I was cut arbitrarily to 13.4 from 15.5 because I won three comps in a row. I'm almost positive that this was done because people had been complaining to the handicap sec.

However, this came after I shot 8 over in a medal, so was 'capable' of playing to it. Took me a good while to adjust though and I never won a comp there again- so they succeeded in that respect.

Cheers Dave- yeah I think that's what's happened too so will make it more challenging next year but I am up for that.

Duncan the best 3 competition scores I had this year were +18, +17 and +17 (they were the only 80's scores I had). then won a doubles Stableford and got to final doubles Matchplay but at least as much of them were down to PP's.

I understand why H/C committee might be tough as don't want "real" bandits but from scores above I hardly shot the lights out comparative to new handicap.

Though I did have a couple of bounce games of 83, 85, 86 off whites so maybe I shouldn't complain too much.

As already said, without all the info it's difficult to call accurately but, based on you having had those 3 scores, and on the assumption that you also buffered a fair % the case for that reduction starts getting stronger! The one exception to the general principle is where a player is too consistent for his category ie the system will recommend a 16 handicapper who scores +17 differential consistently is cut to 15.

I'm sure you won't have any problems with the new level, and will probably be heading lower soon.

Well done on the cut, no more two shots a hole in stableford!!, well done
