Anniversary Of Coventry Blitz

30,000 bombs dropped in two nights. Unbeleivable.

Called into Coventry one Sunday after a weekend away. deffo not one of my fave city's. It looked inside out. having talked to many people there. They all said the same " the Coventry council managed to do what the Luftwaffe could not do, finish off the city". the once magnificent cathedral is now replaced by a monstrous "new cathedral". Shopping centres back onto historical buildings.
The people of Coventry who gave so much during the war deserved to grow up in a better city centre than what they have now. I have seen Berlin cathedral rebuilt, Monte Cassino rebuilt. What went wrong in Coventry.
It is quite interesting that even during the Coventry blitz the BBC were still rubbing folk up the wrong way. Not a lot has changed on that front.
For the people of all City's who went through bombing raids, you can only imagine what the poor soles went through.

Were still finding huge bombs when work is being carried out in and around the city centre, another was found and everywhere evacuated the other week, major redevelopment going on around the train station towards the more run down side of the centre and there doing their best this time to make proper changes, all the ones before were just expensive band aids and didn't work, so many shops empty in the centre, mainly due to extortionate rent & rates that the council want and that just created retail parks nearby which then drove more independent shops to the wall, its just a mish mash and at times not a nice place to walk around, I drive into the indoor Debenhams complex, shop within it and rarely step out of it!

But back to the OP, it must have been a terrible time, Coventry then was a great industrial City manufacturing all manner of vehicles, planes and ammunition, so not surprising it became a target :(

Is it true that Churchill knew that Coventry was the target from broken Enigma codes, but it was felt that if they evacuated the city, it would give the game away.

Horrible position to be put in.

This was discussed on Jeremy Vine on wednesday, the truth apparently was that he only had 3-4hrs notice and could not of done much, it was also mentioned that Hull was the most heavily bombed city per capita during the war, but as such a strategic port they banned the press from mentioning it by name and simply reported it as a town on the east coast or a town in yorkshire, hideous to think what any of our parents and grandparents went through.

Fish when I walked around the city centre I was looking at buildings that would not look out of place in Stratford upon Avon. They were now facing the butt end of shopping centres. I was gobsmacked that someone on a council thought that would look "nice".
The BBC piece states how Coventry city centre looked nice before the bombing. Parts of it still look stunning but it really is a chalk and cheese city unfortunately.

Shark, a couple of years ago me dad told me how he was evacuated from Manchester to Wales during the war for a couple of years. His recollection of some things he did during the war were astounding.
His best mate was killed when a wall fell onto him from a bombed house they were playing in ( dad was not there he was having his jam butty dinner which he dare not miss). Him and his mates used to put bullets in the holes in concrete fence posts and hit them on the back with a hammer and nail to fire the bullets. He was about seven.
said as a kid he could not quite grasp the war, just thought everywhere was a massive building site playing field
