Hi folks
I have glass ankles, wasn’t much of an issue but in the last 4 months I have had a high ankle sprain in the right leg, and on Saturday turned my left one on the tee box when hitting driver, no break that goodness but tissue/muscle damage.
I could use a really good support that I can wear when I play if anyone can recommend?
Thanks.

Whats the underlying issue of going over on them ? Has it been going on for years.

I have had weak ankles for years. Ended up snapping the outer ligament on my left ankle. It was years before I had it re attached. Modified Bostrum repair. Basically slice your ankle open, saw a grove into your ankle. Pull the ligament down. Staple it in and let the bone grow over it. Similar to what Rory had done.
personally I would Google the best ankle supports on the market. Ave had surgical ones and they were rammel.
Re golf, DO NOT CARRY. Although you can see where your walking, when you go over on your ankle, the extra weight will cause extra damage. if your mates smacks his ball in the rough. Wish him luck finding it. I lost count the amount of times I have twisted my ankle looking for balls in the rough.Usually my ball. A remote trolley has helped as that is within sight whilst I am watching where I am walking/ falling.
Lastly, when my ankle ligament had snapped, when I had a lesson re driving and irons I was taught to point my foot 45degrees towards the target as it stopped me rolling over on my ankle.

In my experience. Support’s don’t work. If anything they will make the problem worse. Strength training and improving mobility is probably the best thing for the problem.

Thanks for the reply’s folks.
I had a spiral fracture dislocation to the left one, but this was 18 years ago, tore all the ligaments and broke shin in 4 bits, playing football.
I seem to have an uncanny knack of going over on them, not sure why to be honest, just something that has happened. Not sure how I can strengthen my ligaments, my calves etc are in good shape.
When I get hitting again, I will try to open my foot a bit though, cheers.

Is your name Harry Kane by any chance?

I think this is right. I've sprained each of my ankles in the past, you can wear the support for the immediate few days when it's at its worst and you need it, but they usually say don't keep wearing it for too long or the ligaments become reliant and don't strengthen themselves. Or something like that, that's just my layman's understanding.

Haha, not quite Harry Kane mate !!
ive not had a support on much, was just thinking of one for when I’m out playing golf, or at the gym.

I think that can be a proprioception issue caused by tendon damage in the past? Golgi tendon organs and suchlike...from memory! Google exercises to improve both which tend to be balance on one leg with eyes closed. Basically retraining the messages to the brain that tells it where the foot is and stops it being placed down at the wrong angle.

Not a medic though!!

This is exactly what the physio told me to do when I saw her at hospital. Firstly with my Right/ good foot. Then I did it with my Left/ snapped ligament ankle. I would of fell over. The problem was the Brain was telling my ankle to pivot one way then more and more but my ankle ligament was gone so effectively I would fall over. The only way to fix it was to have the surgery. It got to a case where I wad to have it done. I was falling over numerous times a week. The golf course was fine because the lads were used to seeing me hit the deck. But the ground was usually soft. It was falling over on tarmac which was the problem. My left ankle gave way/ went over yet I would smash my right knee on the floor.

Thanks Rooter.
sounds a bit rubbish that Tashy.

I don’t want to tempt fate, but since then it’s been fantastic. It’s strange but sometimes I will look like I am just going to go over on my ankle and the ligament kicks in. No falling over.

You have my sympathy, but I trust you've actually seen a Doctor and/or Physiotherapist about how handle the problem. I'd suggest they are in a much better position to both diagnose and advise how best to treat/manage the issue than a bunch of unqualified hackers on a golf forum.

yeah I have, but was hoping for a good support that had been tried and tested, so I have a few to look at here which is great. Thanks ?

You say you keep going over on them.
I might be miles off but do you have a balance problem ?
Have you been assessed for your balance ?
