Yet again the British summer seems a long way away.

Managed a few holes on Thursday night. Bright clear conditions but the course was soaked through.

I knew Fridays forecast was not too good but I didn't expect it to be so bad. We've had constant rain all day. Still raining as I write (midnight).

Looks like the range beckons this weekend, I need to swing a club and get back into it after weeks, yes weeks of non playing.
I noticed my game had deteriorated on Thursday night due to abstaining from the game for around a month. Tell you what though, it was grand to get back on the course. Overall play was bad with a few sparks of encouragement.

This summer has left me feeling frustrated. I'd planned a lot of golf on weekends and after work, safe in the knowledge that my game (and handicap) would improve. Unfortunately, due to the washout of a season I feel I've missed out on a lot of golf, my handicap has risen! And I've lost any good technique I had this time last year.

To that end I am now planning on plenty of range time and several visits to the pro during the Autumn and Winter months.

Does anyone else feel similar or am I just being depressingly miserable? :(

Basher I don't think you're being miserable, just realistic.

The weather has been awful recently. Last week there were three holes on winter greens at my course and some of the other greens had been hollow-cored (hollow-tined? what is the correct phrase?).

It was forecast as wet and windy today so I postponed playing in my regular group. One is injured anyway and another was seen in a very wobbly condition in the pub late last night so probably a sound choice on paper. What happens? Open the curtains to blue sky and sunshine. A quick call to the club say that the course actually needed the rain (dried out by the recent strong winds) and is fully open and playing well - DOH!

Got a big 36 hole medal event tomorrow called The Masters. Only open to medal and gold board event winners between August and August each year. I sneaked in thanks to winning the December medal (only player to break par). As my form has not been great all year I'm expecting another day of heartache and playing plenty of shots but I've a good draw and my partners are both a good laugh so it should ease the pain.

Off to the range this morning I think as I haven't hit a ball all week. Just going to work on making a proper turn with hips and shoulders and retaining my height (all problem areas) and just get use to club on ball again.

Forecast is looking ok for tomorrow too with only light (if frequent) showers. That should mean tropical storms and biblical plagues of locusts and weather from the gods!

Our monthly medal was cancelled today also, course was closed yesterday and today, might get a run out tomorrow. The way things are going, there may not be any more handicap qualifiers left.

Horizontal rain and 30mph gusts have left me with no alternative but to clear out the garage this afternoon !

Roll on the winter, at least bad weather is expected than ! ;)

Homer, is that Ascot or Andora? ;)
The Park near Bath has 2 courses closed - ours was barely playable on Thursday. Mr B is doing a DCB and decorating the spare room.

Tomorrow looks better, though - good luck for your comp.

Sorry folks but I live in Northern Spain where the weather is not like the Costas but this summer it has been marvellous. Today I got sunburnt on the course. Downside is that the economic crisis is really kicking in.

It chucked it down here (Shropshire) for 3 days solid.
Course closed u.f.n. Gutted....

Although any golf is messed up, I'm just pleased we're not suffering like some places where folks homes are trashed and flooding has been similar to last summer.

I was up for both Sat (white tee "something") and Sun roll-up.

Thanks to some serious drainage work my club was more than playable all week. Yes there were puddles but they were mainly off the track, the fairways and greens were fine.

Today some of the greens were decidedly squelchy but ran true enough.

I know the weather is bad and while it may one day get better, can it actually get any worse??

Chin up one and all. The world's going to end soon anyway when they fire up that Big Bang machine thingy. Then we can all curl up and forget about it!!

got a round in today at Chesfield Downs. Not my usual course but it drains well so no water problems at all (except the {bleep} pond in front of the 3rd green), though it rained quite heavily a couple of times.

dread to think how mine is holding up, the river looked high yesterday and with a high water table at the best of times . . . last winter the river on the right side of 15 joined up with the lake on the left, all you could see of the 15th and 16th were the tops of the pins.

After my earlier post, course closed today, the sun has been shining a little so 18 holes early tomorow might be on the cards, got a call also to say that I had indeed qualified for the 36hole vice captains tankard competition (first so many ranked from monthly medals) so dont mind missing tday so much now.

I think after all the changable weather & rain we've had in August, we are forgetting the good weather that we have had over recent months.

The odd thing from my point of view is that its ironic that on days I've not been able to golf of perhaps haven't wanted to or known there are other things I needed to do the weather has been good. It seems mostly that on the days I've wanted to go golfing or been able to & have braved the weather, I've gotten caught in the rain &or wind.

TBH I find both a challenge & enjoy playing in wind & or rain.

I agree, wind is a challenge. It can be hugely satisfying when you use the wind to advantage or score well in spite of wind.
rain, I'm not so sure of; but then I wear glasses. an irish 'soft day' i can cope with, it's monsoons (as we had at times today) that I'm not so sure about.

Hi, Im a new member and have been playing on and off for around 14 years. I was a 11 handicapper when I was twelve so picking up a club and playing now does get a little fustrating. Golf is NOT like riding a bike...you dont forget, but your body DOES!!!!

I just joined my local club and am trying to put some cards together for my handicap, but as with everyone else the wheather is either starting to be a problem. Im just getting back used to hitting the ball straight!!!

Anyway just thought id introduce myself!

hi, and welcome. I guess you've been reading so you know what a great crowd you've joined.
have a go at the Ryder cup fantasy league - the more the merrier

I got out today, it was a little damp under foot but nowhere near as wet as I was expecting, got a decent hour of practice and 9 holes behind the junior captains day procession, all pars with one birdie and one bogey, looking forward to next sat and sunday (sunday is the 36 hole club champ and vice captains medal stroke).

Friday closed, Saturday and Sunday open. Stunned that we are getting any golf in at all. Weather not that bad, but with the amount of rain on Friday, the course has drained really well. Squelchy in places, but over all really playable. If being picky, the greens could do with the holes moving and a bit of a cut, but I think the mowers would do more damage than good.
