Money List Winner
***long post***
this may or may not ne apocryphal but what the hell . . .
Following the surge of interest in golf after its introduction as a television event, a survey was conducted of US television viewers in the '60s with their answers agglomerated in a Master Survey for use by potential sponsors.
When and how did golf begin
Arnold Palmer invented it about 8 years ago in a little town outside Pittsburgh
Who was the first woman golfer
It was either a tall blonde named Mickey Wright or a little French girl called Brigitte Bardot. Anyhow they played in Portugal and the French girl lost.
Has golf become more popular
Absolutely. Now it's even played in England where there is a British Open
has this British open become an important event
It sure has! The winner qualifies for the World Series every year in Ohio.
To what do you attribute the growth of golf's popularity
Are you kidding - it's the cash. Some of these guys make more than Willie Shoemaker.
what about the rules of golf, where do they come from
Palmer and a bunch of other pros sat down and made them up
Suppose there's a dispute about the rules - how should it be settled
That's a tough one. I suppose they'd have to ask the sponsor of the program. If the sponsor didn't know maybe they could have a panel discussion?
what is meant by a golf handicap
That's something they made up so Sam Snead could play Weismuller and those other movie stars.
do you know the difference between stroke play and match play
Match play is when they play two on a team on Saturday afternoons and the first prize is $50,000; strokeplay is generally played on Sundays with one man against another, but the money isn't so big.
who - in your opinion is the greatest golfer to date
Palmer - the founder
has anyone come close to matching his skills
young Nicklaus but he hasn't caught up yet
How can you tell
There's no Nicklaus building in New York
What about Bobby Jones
I hear it's a great movie but it hasn't been on television yet
Does golf have a 'czar', like baseball's Ford Frick
Sure. I read he's a young lawyer out of Cleveland who handles all the business for Palmer, Nicklaus and Player, the little guy with the funny accent who teams up with Palmer on weekends.
judging from what you've seen and heard, how far would you say the average professional drives a golf ball
between 325 and 350 yards
what happens when a tournament ends in a tie
they go back to the 14th, where the cameras are first set up and start over again from there
what role do amateurs play in golf
they're like the minor leaguers in baseball or college kids in football. the best ones get to turn pro and play the tour.
have you noticed much difference between the various courses you've seen on television
not much, all of them seem to have 'one of the greatest finishing holes in golf'.
Who are your favourite golf announcers
Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. They go right out on the course in California and say funny things to the players between shots.
final question. more than one community lays claim to being 'the golf capital of the United States'. which city do you think properly holds that distinction
I guess it has to be Las Vegas. They televised two tournaments live from there last year.
