Looks like a busy day for Luke Shaw tomorrow. With Cole announcing his Intl retirement via twitter. Shaw's place to rio would appear in the bag, strong rumours of a £27m bid from UTD too. Think this summer could be painful!! From a Saints and England perspective!!

Class player, I hope he fills the plane with Kids! Ross Barkley, John Stones, Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling, Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana, Daniel Sturridge, Alex Ox Chamberlain are just a few I wanna see go. Whats the point taking anyone else, they have had a go and bombed out so give the youth ago. In terms of Shaw going to UTD £27 is a large amount of money and Southampton's academy is class so they will bring someone else through.

Madness for any footballer. Transfer money has got out of control. The only winners are the players and their agents.

Most definitely - remember baulking when we paid £8mil for Colleymore and before that £2mil for Clough

£27mil for a left back ?! Madness

Obviosuly its a lot of money, and I tend to agree that fullbacks aren't generally the key component of a team. But this lad is class. I'd be gutted if he goes for less than 30. If he's UTD's left back for the next decade plus, the it's not that High a sum.

Chuffed he's going to rio and credit to Cole he could of sulked but at least appears to be towing the party line. One of England's real World Class players from the "Golden Generation".

He is a left back - a talented left back yes but £27mil is utter madness !!

How much is Sterling worth then if a left back goes for £27mil

Not singling out Liverpool here, but how much did they pay for Henderson, Downing, Carroll et al?

It applies to other clubs also (Cleverly, Fellani to Manchester United) but clubs seem to spend massively over the odds on players who have 1 good season.

A player is worth what someone will pay for them.

Gareth bale ale was a £12m left back and he turned out ok. I think Shaw will undoubtably be a top class lb for a decade or more. £3m a season isn't tht bad. I know he bought and resold them so they didn't actually cost you guys too much nett £. But how many lbs did Rafa get through?

ashley Cole is the only lb I've seen consistently have Messi and Ronaldo in his back pocket, obviously UTD may bit have to face those players for a while. But I'd say if he reaches that level then £30 ain't that bad.

to be fair, the lad has been touted for the last 3 years on the terraces. And he's coming from an academy that has pedigree. Out coaches have said he's better at this age than both Bridge and Bale, so I'd be very surprised if he becomes a one season wonder. E

Yeah we have certainly over spent on certain players - even though the Henderson fee (£16mil ) is looking like money well spent

I can understand to a point when teams spend a big amount on game changing players but full backs aren't those players

Sorry it doesn't change that the lad is still a young talented up and coming left back

He will cost more than what we paid for Suarez , what City paid for Dzeko and believe Toure as well.

£27mil ?!? That's a ludicrous fee for a left back.

examples can be given both ways. You paid more for Sakho than Sturridge.
Check his record this year, I had a little look and he is right up there with the best full backs in the league. Everton would want 20m plus for Baines. And Shaw has a lot more ahead of him yet. I fully agree that it's a high fee. But for the years they'll get from him it'll be peanuts compared to having to constantly look for replacements.

As for full backs not being important, tell that to the classic Brazil sides. Or any side that has has Ashley cole or dani Alves in. Or lahm in.

Look ok at everton, Baines isn't just an lb he's a creative part if the side. Much like Shaw could become. I respect your point about him being an lb and you don't think it's fair value. So I will respect it at won't further try to convince you if his merits. I hope in hindsight after a long career I'll be right. Either way saints are in for a nice windfall.

Don't worry Phil. Jordan Obita was at the Liverpool game today, and you will get him for as little as £20 million. Fortunately for us the price of left backs has suddenly gone up.

I may have missed it somewhere but which one I saints rivals is it you support again..........

Cleverley cost nowt thankfully!

The way I view the Shaw deal is that he's 18 (19 in July) so he could easily be United's left back for the next 12 or so years

If a full back puts a class striker/winger in his back pocket, I'd be inclined to say he's a game changer. And if you add in the creativity of a Leighton Baines, I'd definitely say he's a game changer. Position has nowt to do with their game changing ability.

That said, Its a 'ell of a lot of money for someone who isn't yet the full package. There's been plenty of very talented youngsters who've turned out to be average by their mid 20's.

Its a gamble that might pay off, or might not.

Spoke to someone with contacts in the club yesterday. It seems a lot of these rumours are being started by a poisonous unhappy little ex-chairman, who may come from Italy and be a bit of a power crazy control freak. It seems he didn't leave, he was sacked and is none too happy about it so is trying to destabilise the club through the media. Whether that is so he can come back or just out of bitterness is up for debate. Also I think looking at Lallana's body language during the post match walkround we've seen the last of him in a Saints shirt:(
