1st lesson for a fair while as part of a new academy programme with a Pro I used a couple of years back who has gone onto the europro.

Anyhoo, we had a coffee and a natter beforehand then hit a few shots which he video'd. He commented that I have deffo come on since he last saw me but he spotted my issues straight away. (Don't they always!!)

So 1st up I have gone back to a baseball grip, I use this for chipping anyway and it feels more in control for me, my issue is flipping at the ball so concentrating on keeping the shaft going through the ball. 2nd was balance, I was moving forward slightly causing me to come over the top slightly which is the reason I tend to fat the ball a lot also.

Got a drill only hitting 10, 20 and 30yds so its a case of practice, practice and practice a bit more until my next lesson on 14th Feb. I have to admit to hitting half a dozen balls using a full swing after employing the new method and it was very good.

Even better is he is now a member of Woburn thanks to his sponsors so I can have my playing lessons there if I want :)

6 weeks in, and I'm still struggling with my usual problem. I had 6 lessons 30 years ago, and had the same issue. It won't go away. I've tried to fix it for so long, and just can't. It's a bit of a .....

Good luck!

That may not be a good idea with all those trees.

Interesting about the baseball grip. I would have thought that could cause flipping, with the hands working more independently than say an interlocking grip. I seem to remember reading years ago that it was a grip recommended for golfers with small hands. Have you got dainty digits mate ?;)

It's called 'natural style'!

Though, certainly in my case, that doesn't mean 'stylish'!

It's a pain in the b..... And certainly is not stylish. I know what I need to do, it's not hard, I can do it in slo mo, but I can't do it full chat. How hard can it be?

Good luck to Gibbo, you'll need it.

I know exactly what you mean Murph, I can hit sopme peaches but then play like a complete div. Hoping by getting some good fundamentals it might just give me a modicum of consistency going forward

Iv'e given this issue a lot of thought and consideration for some time now. The normal responses to flipping the wrists and not taking divots is 'trying to help the ball up' , 'hanging back', 'stopping body rotation' etc and in many cases this is correct. I would suggest that swinging too in to out and/or steeply where the hands finish high and near to the left ear is also a big contributor, especially in better golfers.

When the club swings this way it will be lifting very quickly through impact and will also create a number of fat and thin shots. The way to improve this is to ensure the club moves back to the inside through impact and the finish has the club more over the tip of the left shoulder. This keeps the clubface nearer the ground through the impact zone and helps to promote a ball then turf hit which enables a flat left wrist to be more easily achieved.

May be worth a try. Just ask if you need some more clarification.

Good luck gibbo, especially the fact that you booked your next lesson on valentines day,

Your either single or soon to be divorced.

:clap::clap::clap:

Serious not G1bbo I hope you get something out of this, you love the game 2 much to put the clubs on the shelf.

And that kind of sums up my golf. I have swing flaws, especially the standing up on the downswing. BUT I now have a better club head path and angle of attack and my quality of ball striking has come on leaps and bounds. I'm not really that fussed on working on fixing this now and I just want my pro to tweak and tidy rather than rebuild and fix. I'd rather he and I focussed on the scoring zone from 100 yards in and sharpening up my putting, chipping and bunker play

Good luck with the changes Gibbo, I recently started a course of lessons but after the first I injured myself at football so haven't been able to rotate my body or swing so haven't been able to work on it.

Good luck!
Just a couple of things, a lot of you guys get a little hung up in the details. Just concentrate on having the club hitting the ball first and the face going through the target. Everything else just drops into a comfortable place from there. Secondly slow down, it's like running before you can walk. You will achieve a purer strike and more distance when you control yourself. Finally play sensible, be honest with yourself. If it's a hard shot bail out make it simple hit something your comfortable with....
That is just the secret, no one has to be a super athlete , just honest and not over ambitious.
With regards women get one who is into golf, then you don't have justify or lie about new clubs , practice or having a game.

Good luck with the lessons, in my experience its the best way to go.

To those of you who have struggled with a swing issue for a while, I would recommend changing your pro. I had 8 lessons over 18 months with my local pro and improved dramatically but there was one issue I just couldn't fix. After several months of trying what the pro had told me to do, I tried another pro. In one lesson it was done. It can be tough if you've built up a rapport with a teacher but I'm so glad I did.

I agree. Started with one guy but he had to go and have two major knee ops so swapped to another guy. Technical but that's the way L earned and we made some good progress but after two years or so felt I was plateauing and despite working on what he showed me I wasn't getting down further. Swapped to my current pro at a local range on word of mouth recommendation in winter 2012 and rebuilt most of my swing. Very happy with how its going even if handicap and results don't reflect it. The swing is more controlled and repeatable and I need to trust more (old fault) and sharpen the short game (even older nemesis) and I am a glass half full confident 2014 will be good

Good luck gibbo. I've had three so far and starting to see the benefits big time. I still throw in a run of holes of utter gash but between I've played some of my best golf ever. This weekend I was on 12 points through the first 4 holes. Would have been more if the putter wasn't ice cold! I tend to switch off if things go well thinking today's the day and stop doing what I was doing to play well. Ended up on 30 points which just shows up this weakness! A bit all or nothing at the moment but the good stuff is so good I just need to work on consistency.

Which reminds me I need to book my next one and a putting lesson!
