Well, after the posts earlier in the year about 4 day weeks, I have finally been made redundant. Not something you expect to hear from a solicitor but still.....

Anyone been through the process before that can offer any advice on where they went from there?

(apologies, had a few beers since I found out)

Been through it several times now. Still comes as a shock each time. Best thing I can advise is be careful with your redundancy. We all think we can leave one job and walk into another and to a certain degree that is true.

However walking into another one you actually like and is right for you is not always so easy. It may take 3-4 months to find the right role. It took me 8 months including at least 6 thanks but not thanks interviews, loads of applications and signing on with about 15 agencies before I got my job now which I love. The temptation is because you have cash on the hip to go blow it on shiny new sticks.

Be careful. If you don't find a good job straightaway that money can become a lifeline especially in the current credit crunch. If you can find a good job quickly then by all means go nuts and buy out the nearest AG and have fun telling us all about it.

Hope the head isn't too sore in the morning and if you want a chat offline just PM

Terrible news,
I know you won't think it now, but you should try and think of it as an opportunity to try and get a better job, as sometimes it takes a something like this to spur you on.
Have actually been made redundant, or have you been give notice of redundancy?
Wish you all the best for the future either way

Sorry to hear it mate. Only been through it once - a long time ago. Can't suggest much except have a few beers, cuss and rant for a few days, but make no decisions yet. A few days or couple weeks will give you time to bring some clarity to your thoughts. Financial & family pressures can be great, but most of us can afford a brief spell before getting back on the hamster wheel - or trying to work out how to do it, or in deciding which one to climb on.

I was made redundant in my early twenties (many years ago) first thought was (you're going to get yours pal!) after a couple of heavy sessions feeling sorry for myself I shook myself up and got another job. Sometimes a stop gap job just to get you by until your ideal job comes up. Sign on with a couple of agencies. Or you could hang on and wait for the right job but redundancy money doesn't last long when you're not earning and retain the same quality of life.

On a brighter note My missus was made redundant and walked straight into a job that she loves and earns almost as much as me so it's not all doom and gloom

Be very, very careful what you do next!!

My other half is in HR and I have some dispute experience from a previous job. PM me if you would like to talk, would be glad to offer any help I can.

GB72, Ive never been through a redundancy before, the only advice I can give you is that its easier to get a job when you have a job, if it pays the bills and isnt too stressful then take something soon but keep the hook dangling and you will soon get a bigger bite.

Sorry to hear this as its one of the crappiest feeling ever when you hear those words.
When i was made redundant nearly 9 years ago the wife was also 7 months pregnant. Found it difficult to understand why until the company went bust 10 months later(we were sacrificed to save money).
The best advice i could offer is to take it as a virtual compliment and make the most of what you are entitled to. Look around a lot and even take a chance and change career and do something different, something you have always wanted to do.
If you are a good man it is their loss and not yours so hold your head up high as you walk away.

been there its like a knife in the guts.
the dispare is terible and the thoughts depressing.
But you must look on the positive side, if you are given 90 days notice use it.
Had to go through this a few times as union rep and steward.
get good advice contact CAB on job shop at once.
always ask and advice will be given, said at the last time well i will get the garden done and have a few rounds of golf. No such luck 3 days i had and then a phone call can you start in the morning never stopped for 5years now [i need abreak!]
best of luck and keep chugging along

Happened once to me, and worked out really well. Got a new job lined up (for more money) while working my notice period, trousered all the redundancy cash, then explained to my new company that I was not available to start for 2 months due to commitments, and took June and July off to play golf.

Not helpful for you, but you may yet turn this to your advantage.

Best of luck with the job hunting.

I might be in the same boat as you very soon mate, the College I lecture for is keeping me on a visiting teacher salary meaning I only get paid for the hours I teach, so during the hols I get nothing! I have been here nearly two years and they refuse to give me a contract! It’s all to do with saving money! Any how after two years I am automatically offered a redundancy otherwise they have to pay me a salary.

Sorry to hear about your news, but it might be for the best, enjoy the time off play some golf, look for better jobs + spend some time with your family.

Have thought about it but in the current climate it is very difficult to secure the finance needed to start such a venture, especially as it is 203 months before you see any fees.

Will give it a month of job hunting before I really start to panic.

On the happier side (sort of) my wife has just been informed of a pretty decent inheritance that she was not expecting and that will keep the wolves from the door for a while.
