Back in November, SKY News ran an article in which it was stated that all 1st generation iPod Nanos purchased between 2005 and 2006 had a battery problem. Apparently the batteries overheated. I'd never had any problems with mine. The report went on to say that anyone owning a 1st gen iPod Nanos should contact Apple as a replacement would be given.
So, I contacted Apple and they asked me to send my 2GB Nano back to them, which I did.
Today, I've just taken delivery of a brand new 8GB iPod Nano which looks fantastic!

So, many thanks Apple! :D

Here's my 1st gen ipod.
Not as posh as a nano though, but maybe worth a few bob soon

The only trouble is I can synch it with itunes.
Not sure if its a wrong cable but its a firewire connection on the ipod

Have you tried using a firewire to USB? Probably won't work with modern day itunes since they went for the universal thin slot connection on the iPod.

why not trade in for a new one FOC?

my old iPhone 3gs was acting up 1 month before contract end, they gave me a new one then 1 month later another new one to renew my contract. I passed on the new one to SWMBO which gave me 3 browny points

I'd rather find a cable that works and then flog it. Ive got a newer one that I use now although atm, I cant find the cable for that one either.

Thanks for that AW, I didn't know there was a problem with them until I read this. Just been onto the Apple website and mine is one of the affected ones. Waiting for the return box to turn up now.

but a new one FOC then flog that for significantly more than the 1st gen one is a no-brainer or am I missing something?

AW - thanks for the reminder mate ; registered mine tonight and await the box.
Will be a nice replacement as the battery was dying anyway

Bob - are you one of those kids who never took their toys out of their boxes and they are worth a fortune, but you never ever got to play with them ?
