...goes to SMIFFY.

Great day at The Addington today. 36 holes with lunch and ne'er a hitch. He even organised the weather. :)

Well done mate. I really enjoyed it. (Shame you had to make up the numbers with some from that "other" forum. :))

Great day out on a very (and I mean VERY) difficult course. 20 of us went in total, from this site we had Leftie, GolfMadWillie (Neil), Heronsghyll (Dave)and the rest were made up of mates of mine and some members from the Golf Magic site (who are a great bunch of lads).
As I say, it was a very difficult course, with quite a few holes where you stood on the tee not knowing exactly where the hole went or what club to hit. The fairways were very fast, and on most of the holes, anything hit slightly off line would find the ball bouncing and scuttling into trouble leaving you either chipping out sideways from the trees, or picking the ball up and giving up!
As picturesque as the course is, I would hate to play there in the middle of Summer when the fairways were bone hard. A little unfair in places, where even a good shot can be penalised.
I didn't play too badly, 32 points in the morning and 28 in the afternoon, so an average of 30 for the two rounds. I would have taken that in advance as I knew the course was going to be tricky.
The 13th is a really long par 3, the signature hole on the course and I was quite chuffed to have parred this both rounds. First round was a chip and putt par but in the afternoon I nailed a 5 wood to within 5 feet but missed the birdie putt. It was good to see Rog (Leftie) again, and nice to meet up with Dave & Neil for the first time. Shame we didn't get to chat that much, but that's always the case with this type of event. Neil (GolfMadWillie) won the longest drive competition, but I will let him tell you about the superb first round score he posted.. :D :D :D
A great day out and I'll book it again if the same offer is made available.

I must add my vote of thanks.

My first GM forum golf day - and I loved it. Great people, stunning golf course.

A smal point of advice for anyone going there - it was hard work. Personally I will never play that course again over 36 holes without a buggy. It was very demanding. 18 is OK, but 36 in a day you need help!!!

I still feel at £50 for 36 holes including lunch was amazing value. Anyone who did not go missed a great opportunity. My advice, if Smithy does this again, make sure you attend.

I was absolutely knackered this morning Dave.
The only part of me that wasn't stiff was a part of me that I quite often want stiff
I'd be up for a buggy next time myself

It was all the walking in the trees that done it Rog!
Seriously, didn't you think the course was a little "Mickey Mouse" in places?
I don't mind being penalised if I hit a bad shot....if you dump it in a lake, fair enough. If you hit it into the trees...tough luck. But when you knock a drive straight down the middle and watch your ball bounce 100 yards across the fairway and end up in the roots of a tree????
As I said before, I'd hate to play it in the Summer when the ground was bone hard. It would be suicidal.

Course management my boy, course management.

At least you can now usually find your ball if it goes a tad offline. A couple of years ago, before RN bought the course and started a clearance project so that he could get more punters through quicker, anything in the trees would have been in deep dodah.

You did very well to par the 13th twice, I think that I bogied and doubled it . Did you climb up to the whites and "proper" yellows on that hole just to have a look? There was only one choice of club from there - driver.

I played the course many years ago, before the current regime, off the proper yellows. The 13th! Scary wasn't the word for it. Anything slightly right was in the trees and rubbish. Anything short was (somewhere) in the heather as was anything left if you managed to miss the bunkers.

Quote "The course has certainly had it's fair share of plaudits. Former member and acclaimed golf wiiter Henry Longhurst described the 230 yard par 3, 13th hole as 'with the exception of the fifth at Pine Valley, near Philadelphia, the greatest one-shot hole in inland golf'. The 16th is also included in his all time great golf holes."
