Anchoring rule - Your opinion on the hot topic. Rants encouraged.

Rules are not up for debate unless you are on a rules committee?

There are few rules I would debate, I think golfs rules are pretty fair if we all play to the same set.

The only rant I could have is to the fact that it's been allowed for so long in the first place.

There's a typo in the questionnaire btw regarding the year.

something that's in anyways 'anchored' cannot constitute to be any part of an action that's a ...... 'free swing'

lax work from the USGA & R&A from as far back as the mid 1960's
many folks think it's a more modern day malaise but if you look back into it, it is not, but don't think that Leo Diegel back in 1924 would have known what came later ...... after his putter handle in the belly

there was an opportunity in 1989 to do something about it but again the USGA & the R&A fudged it
bad leadership from David Fay exec director of the USGA & presumably his opposite number at the R&A at that time
David Fay saying as a justification/explanation "putting is a very individualized art form to inhibit a golfer's style would take some fun out of the game" ....... so it was allowed to continue on

taken far too long for something to be done so that what happens with everyone's flat stick conforms to the rule of the game

in 2003 8 events were won by folks using anchored putters (4 by VJ) one was won by Steve Flesch (Zurich Masters) who said "this is like cheating" - he was not wrong on that
again in the same year the USGA & the R&A fudged the issue by just announcing the maximum length of all clubs should be 48" (aimed at driver shaft length) ... with the exception of the putter

Indeed. Him winning the Masters wasnt quite the same as if he had done it with a normal putter.

It's harsh - but that's how I feel. Just makes it feel that he's desperate to keep winning even although he doesn't need more titles to prove himself as a great golfer - and he certainly doesn't need the money.

Bit harsh - he won playing the game within the rules

Same as Els , Bradley and Simpson

I still think they just reacted because a few won some majors - anchoring etc had been allowed since the start of golf has it not ?

Majors with long putters were won quite properly within the rules.

I dont like anchoring putters, but that is nonsense IMO..

he won the Masters whilst observing the rules - have a go at the rule makers, not the player playing by the rules

Thread title is "Your opinion." Not what are the rules.

Thank you.

And that's my opinion. While they are legal,, those that that have won at the highest level have done nothing wrong. I personally don't agree with anchoring and think it's something that needed reviewing at least a decade ago but it wasn't and there's nothing that can be done now except look forward to seeing how the best players using a long putter get on

Indeed, same can be said about corporate tax. It's not the players fault here, the rules should have been sorted a long time ago but the are what they are and it's up to the rule makers to be active in keeping them up to date.

I personally think that long putters and anchoring should never have been allowed in the first place, because it is not a proper golf stroke. Croquet style putting between the legs (as used by Sam Snead and a few others) was banned quickly enough! At last this omission has been put right, but they should have gone further and specified a maximum length for putters IMHO.

How long..?
A player of 5' would potentially need a putter of 30" but a player like Robert Karlsson plays something like a 37" putter but it looks like a normal size.
There's already a maximum length of a club isn't there..?
As long as the putter is held in the hands and you have to swing it, length isn't issue.

I know they were. Then the decision was made that they weren't good for the game. The top pros (at least) should have taken a lead and stopped using them as soon as that decision was made - notwithstanding the delay to them being banned.
