Played in the Thursday morning roll-up today with the old boys. Standing on the 15th tee having a fairly average round I go and smash my driver out to the right into the trees, followed by a couple of swear words and a look of amazement. One of my playing partners who is off 19 made an interesting observation. He said I always generate a lot of club speed but never look like I am trying to hit it. But when I hit a bad shot I look like I am trying to hit it.

What you mean like trying to smash the ball?

See it at my club a lot, people with fancy clubs trying too hard to hit it, just make a good connection with the ball and let the club do the work that why it cost so much

I think that was his point. He said about when you see people like Ernie Els, they just put a smooth wing on it and generate great club head speed. Other people like John Daly etc give it a big rip and generate big clubhead speeds. I just appear to put no effort into the swing but hit it long, when I do put effort in I miss the fairway. Interesting it took a 19 handicapper to point that out compared to the many scratch golfers that I play with.

Just watched it rocket. That is exactly what my playing partner said to me. Amazing how it took a 19 handicapper to point it out. Played at the weekend with a 3 and +2 but neither mentioned it when I hit a bad shot.

Has really put something into my head to think about

I have definitely recognised it in my shots when I am thinking I need to make a good strike on this to have a chance to score etc and lash at it a bit.

Even more so into the wind - try and give it a bit extra and it goes all wrong.

When I have my thinking head on and recognise this I can stop myself doing it - often I don't have my thinking head on though!!

I like to think of my expression.....

"Nice and smooth and all is fluid"................Seems to work for me no end:)
