An eagle, a cut and a question about ESR

I played the 2nd round of the Stone Cup today at RAGC. It's a stableford comp played over 2 rounds. Things were going nicely at the turn with 19 points on the board and then we hit a bit of traffic and I started to get a bit agitated with the pace of play. I dropped a couple of shots at the start of the front nine but managed to par 14 to get me back on handicap. I'd set myself a target of 37 points which meant playing the last 4 holes in 1 over which is a decent finish round our track. I hit 2 good shots down the par 5 15th which gave me a chance to hit my 3rd close. The moment I hit it I knew it was going to be close but was still shocked to see it drop in for an eagle 3 :whoo: That gave me a massive boost and I parred my way in for a gross 75 and 40 points.

This means as long as CSS stays level I'm down to 8.7, my lowest ever handicap but the real point of the post is with regard to ESR.

My last 4 qualifying scores have been as follows...

41 points (Par=70, SSS=70, CSS=71)
36 points (Par=70, SSS=69, CSS=68)
32 points (Par=70, SSS=70, CSS=70)
40 points (Par=70, SSS=70, CSS=70)

CSS on the last 2 results is still to be confirmed but assuming it is right, in my last 4 qualifiers I will have had a Nett differential of -6 and one of -4. Am I right in thinking this would be in the realms of a 1 shot ESR?

top stuff Hawkeye, wp mate

not sure on exactly how the ESR works but if it doesnt apply on those 4 scores then im struggling to see the point of it personally

Yes - 1 shot ESR if those were 4 qualifiers in sequence.

If you had pulled your finger out and scored 41 points on the last round, it would have been 2 shots ESR.

Those are my last 4 qualifiers yes, fingers crossed CSS behaves itself today.

Oh, and I 3-stabbed 10 and 12 as well so 41\42 points wasn't far away

Well played fella, good to see this after you struggled a bit a few months back iirc. Always good to see somebody come out the other side laughing

Thanks Birchy, I was really struggling while I was having lessons but that all seems a distant memory now. Had I not had a shocker the front nine yesterday with my 11 points it could have been even better, I played those 9 holes in +11 and the 27 since in +7 (although the eagle was a bit of a bonus)

Good shooting but what is ESR and do you guys never play stroke play or is it stableford comps all the time, for me a true test of handicap is stroke play.

Strictly speaking stableford is strokeplay, and yes we do but I missed the last one as I was away. It makes no difference anyway as h'caps are calculated using stableford adjustments for medal rounds. Besides, when I'm shooting gross 75s and 76s the format is largely irrelevant.

ESR is an Exceptional Scoring Reduction which is a flag in the h'cap software that recommends additional reductions when players shoot 4 under h'cap in quick succession.

Well done.

Could be 2 shot ESR recommendation if CSS goes up.

How'd Homer do?

Not so hot. 29 points yesterday and 32 today. Felt I hit it better today but lost a ball on 10 and 12 off the tee. Not bad strikes just a bit of a pull. Probably only 10 yards off being safe. Putted badly on the back nine but enough good shots in the round to still be cautiously optimistic it is coming together. Just need a modicum more consistency

Just out of curiosity, is it the lessons which have helped you kick on, or did you just give them up as a bad job and play better anyway ? (apologies if you have already detailed this somewhere else).

Impressive scoring by the way. There's not much room for mistakes when you're down with the single figures.

I had a series of lessons earlier in the year, still actually got one left. We didn't change anything drastic but it took a couple of months to get used to them anyway. I started playing well around easter without the scores to match and then took a nose dive for a couple of weeks so went back to see the pro who identified the issue straight away (old habit I drifted back into) and from then I just needed to learn to trust it.

IMHO it wouldn't justify a ESR cut you have played 4 rounds only 2 under handicap and its not exactly exceptional scoring even tho it is good scoring well done on your cut

Well it seems my recent form has been good enough for an ESR reduction of not one but TWO shots and my new handicap after this weekends competition is now 6.5, 24 days ago I was off 10.6.

6.5
