Off to Amsterdam week tomorrow to watch Scotland get tanked and take in some culture like the Ann Frank museum,a canal trip and may also chance a pint or 2 while we are there. ;)

Staying in a Hotel (well it an apartment actually) called the Greenhouse Effect in the red light district and wondered if anyone knows of it or has any tips for good drinking holes in the city?

The red light district the only hotel you could find Dodger?????

I was there in 1980 I think, I wonder if the same girls are still there? :p

One fit piece I remember was a member of the Dutch hill climbing team. :D

I hear Moulin Rouge is a bit classy ;)

Actually i'm lying, its not at all! We stayed in The Bulldog last year which is one street back from the main red light strip and had a quality time, apart from all the coke dealers offering drugs and sex to my wife every 10 seconds :D

I used to live in Holland and stayed there plenty - in the red light district more often than not.

A decent tip is there is to take teh boat trip that goes round the canals - you can get on and off. We did it as a "boat crawl" - theres a boozer within 300 yds of every stop, including opposite ann frank's house!

Get to see most sights for about 12 €, and get around the city at the same time.

As someone else said, Banana Bar is well known - a mate of mine once got thrown out for booing the act! I imagine most of the invading Scots will be around the red light district, so may be an idea to go elsewhere for a good drink - there's plenty of places down near the Heineken factory/museum.

I have been interested in the story of Anne Frank for a while and was amazed to find out that they had discovered a new page from her diary.

here it is........

I was in Amsterdam when the Tartan Army was using it as a base when Scotland were playing in Ukraine.

The red light district was heaving with them. When going out i would also be tempted to go out towards the Heineken factory/museum or round towards the Van Gogh museum and Leidse square

I have been to the said Anne Frank museum and it was fascinating if a little weird. They are ultra strict on enforcing no flash photography / photography of any kind though, and if you have a rucksack with you they make you where it on the front so you can see what you are doing with it. Also try to avoid going when someone drastically overweight is attempting to get up the famous staircase you will have seen pictures of! to be honest what you actually see isn't all that great depending on your outlook on historical artifacts, but for me it was more the fact of going to the house where such world widely renowned stories unfolded that engaged my interest. Plus when I went the annexed souvenir shop was pricey to say the least!

I also embarked on a canal trip which was very relaxing although to be honest a lot of it is all the same so you don't really see much- at one point though there is a large ship which I never got the story on but was quite strange, not sure if you will see it though.

Another thing to look out for, not necessarily on the canal trip, and if you are an Only fools and Horses fan, is the building where the 'To Hull and Back' episode was filmed, there is a brass plaque saying so on the outside.

To be fair the Amsterdam is dealt a gross injustice when people consider it solely for the sex industry as there is a lot more to it than that. A tour round the Amsterdam Arena is also well worthwhile if you get a chance, I'm not sure if that is where the game is being staged but the stadium is great- it has the second steepest gradient in Europe and it makes for a great atmosphere and excellent viewing. Also just the way it looks and how you get around the ground is superb and very modern, and unlike many clubs the training ground is right next door.

Of course there is then the world renowned red light district which I am sure you already have heard more than enough about! In addition to the somewhat flexible internet Cafe laws that exist.

Anyway enjoy your trip, it is actually a great city and well worth a trip away. Oh and sorry this post is probably of no help whatsoever as I haven't recommended a hotel- only because I can't remember where I stayed. It was very nice though and well located compared to some others! Sorry that doesn't help either ;)
