Americans doing something right?

Sounds great until they create either a mini sun and cook the earth, or a black hole which swallows us up.

On a more serious note. Do we think a technology that could potentially give the planet unlimited clean energy would ever be allowed to see the light of day?
I'd like to think even the far Right folks couldn't kill off this information.....if proven true. They like to believe in free rights, until it isn't what they want.

We are talking now ( or soon) of the survival of the planet, climate change etc.
And this may be the big saviour, so….

Too big to bury, too much information these days to hide, too much pressure for clean energy to deny us its benefits.
Providing it can be harnessed in sufficient quantities, which, knowing human ingenuity, I think it will be.

Oil barons not too powerful in the face of the 21st century.

On a serious note, with clean energy just around the corner. ?
It then begs the question why are we still investing billions in dirty nuclear. ☹️

For something of this nature, there's rather a long time between it being experimental and being practical & functional commercially. We probably need something to tide us over the next two or three decades at least

There is a common misconception that climate change is about saving the planet. It isn’t, it’s about saving us as a species.

The planet will be absolutely fine and will flourish once we’re extinct. Presuming something else doesn’t come along and destroy it!

This technology could still take another 50 or 100 years to become viable, if ever.

For as long as I can remember, fusion has always been 30 years away. And my memory goes back more than 30 years.
This latest achievement is just one tiny baby step of progress, and there have been many others over the last few decades.
For now, the focus should be on ramping up renewables that use currently available technologies, and finding ways to store power that doesn't involve stripping the Earth of scarce resources like lithium and cobalt.

I am old enough to recall that Hydro Electrics was going to give us free electricity.
I remember going to a hydro electric plant in north Wales as part of my geography A level (mid 80's). It seemed so simple, so logical. I'm not sure why more didn't happen. If only there was the zeal for them by the powers that be as for electric cars, they could have been all over the country.

OK, Mr Pedant, I”ll plead to falling into the brevity trap?
Should have said “survival of the planet fit for us to live here”.
But I think you understood that really ?. In the context of the thread , I don’t think most thought I was referring to the planet ceasing to exist, as in expansion of the Sun etc…
This technology may never become viable, I agree, but if that is determined by the limits of the physics, then ,yes, we won’t see it.
But if you think it will be determined by the limits of human knowledge and learning, then ,going by the last one hundred years progress, I’d place a bet on us managing it?
