The American Golf Tour Truck is visiting my local store next week and my father-in-law has asked about going along for him to get fitted for some new clubs.

Has anyone got any experiences, good or bad, about these fitting days? Will they try to push him towards whatever brand they make most commission on or will they give him a proper fitting and suggest the clubs that are best for him?

I went and watched a mate being fitted a year or so ago by the truck staff and was quite impressed. He asked which clubs my mate wanted to try and went through the same fitting procedure that I've seen and done at most club fitters. He had the latest Flightscope equipment and a good range of shafts etc

I'd certainly be happy to give it a go

Good job it doesn't roll around town like an ice cream van. Just imagine all of those middle-aged guys rushing out to buy something....

This is what American golf tend to do . Not got any experience with fitting trucks though but I'd be more tempted to go to your local pro for advice over new clubs instead .

I friend of mine works at AG. Don't worry about this, the commission structure really is poor so they sell what works best.

I used the tour truck a few years ago. Was fitted by a guy called Karl, who certainly knew his stuff and was very helpful.

I was fitted for my last irons by them about 18 months ago.

I was really impressed, very knowledgeable, didn't push any specific brand etc. Tried all sorts of shaft options and took his time, not rushed in and out.

Certainly on par with fittings I've had at places like the Belfrey with the exception of hitting into a net rather than out onto a range.

I've had a fitting both ways - driver at AG and irons at a club pro.

The process is pretty similar, a club pro will have certain brands available with a wide variety of shaft options to try with different heads. AG probably have a broader range of brands to try but a more limited shaft selection.

So, it depends what you are after really, in both cases you might be left wondering if a different shaft or different club manufacturer would have suited you better.

Overall though both experiences were positive ones for me, I left with some good ideas and new clubs that were a little longer and straighter.

Nice to hear good experiences. The AG close to me keeps on at me to get my Ap2's fitted. I'm rather skeptical at his stage before my lessons get into full swing as my swing my change during. Is the general view to just get fitted for the swing you have these days?

I've been fitted for Rory McIlroy's swing.....one day I'll get there....
